I recently referenced spending two weeks with my adult son--not a vacation! He was very sick and spent one week in hospital and one beginning recovery from his mom's home. Ugh for him, wonderful for me. He is 34 and has Down syndrome. Those who know me well, know this part of my life. It is awesome and perhaps the best grounding for truly understanding expectations + opportunity = great outcomes. Business 101 often fails in the public and private school systems. Getting a good education (you know, not separate but equal, but just Equal) is very hard work for someone with an identifyable disability but creates learnings and independence that help people become independent adults. And so the day Jordan Kidder left my home with all medications understood and self testing mastered was a joyful day as he moved back to his own home. I am grateful for modern medicine and our ability to do so much from home. And grateful to all the teachers who overcame their frustration with my demands for inclusive education to give him a chance to be the learner he is today. Oh, and my absence from LI and work from June 4 to June 24--Not a Vacation!!

Having just spent two weeks with my independent adult son with Down syndrome, I can support the message of the video as absolutely spot on. Without being in a chemistry class, he wouldn't have learned the periodic table; without being in a large and inclusive school, he would not have been able to navigate the large world in which he lives. Without being exposed to science, he would not be able to live independently and manage his medications to regain his health and return to work. Beautiful depiction of how our attitudes impact expectations and expectations impact outcomes!
