This gets said all the time but since so many designers still fail at this, here it is againโฆ ๐จ Designers, reasons youโll probably get skipped during application screening (especially if there is a large number of candidates): - There is no portfolio link on your resume ๐ฑ - Your portfolio is password protected and you didnโt include the password ๐ค (unfortunately we donโt always have time to message people for these so please just include it ON YOUR RESUME next to the portfolio link!) - Your portfolio link is broken ๐ซ - Your portfolio is just screenshots without explanation ๐คทโ๏ธ

Using flashy graphics and designs on resumes to stand out is tempting. However, this often backfires. Hereโs why clean, simple resumes are more effective: 1. **ATS Compatibility**: Applicant Tracking Systems struggle with graphic-heavy resumes, often missing important information and rejecting qualified candidates. 2. **Readability**: Recruiters, managers, and HR professionals spend just seconds scanning resumes. Clear, straightforward designs help them quickly find key skills and experiences. 3. **Professionalism**: A well-organized, simple resume shows that you value substance over style and can communicate effectively. 4. **Focus on Real Skills**: Prioritize showcasing your actual skills and achievements instead of relying on buzzwords or fancy visuals. A clean, content-rich resume will always make a stronger impression. Let your skills and experience speak for themselves!

Poll Results: The Use of Color in Resumes ๐ Last week, I asked you about your thoughts on using color to brand your resume. The results are in: ยท Yes, it helps me stand out: 20% ยท No, I am a traditionalist: 50% ยท Considering for next update: 10% ยท Unsure of color's impact: 20% It's clear that opinions are varied, with a notable 50% sticking to traditional black and white formats. However, 20% have embraced color to differentiate themselves, and another 30% are open to the idea. Why Consider Using Color? 1. Visual Appeal: A touch of color can make your resume more visually appealing and memorable to recruiters. It's not just about looking pretty; it's about making a lasting impression. 2. Brand Identity: Colors can reflect your personal brand or the industry you're targeting. For example, blue can convey trust and dependability, while green is often associated with growth and innovation. 3. Spotlight your Achievements: Color can be used as your personal spotlight, guiding the recruiter's gaze to your proudest accomplishments. It's like saying, "Hey, don't miss this!" 4. Standing Out: In a stack of plain resumes, a well-designed, resume that uses color strategically can stand out and show you're not afraid to think outside the conventional black and white box. Remember balance is key. Overdoing it can have the opposite effect, making your resume look unprofessional. Stick to one or two colors that complement each other and ensure the overall design remains clean and easy to read. #ResumeTips #PersonalBranding #CareerDevelopment #PeopleFirstHR

Over the last 10+ years, I have reviewed tens of thousands of resumes. These 4 things take away from your resume and distract from what you're trying to share. Too many fonts - shifting fonts, sizes, and colors can be distracting to the reader. - 2 max - Bold, underline, and italics when appropriate Graphs - ideal for presentations, not resumes. - Share the value youโve added - Can be difficult to connect to the role Generic skills - random words donโt mean anything. - Quick learner, great communication, etc., is subjective and has no value - Share examples of specific skills used to achieve exceptional outcomes Rambling job description - details irrelevant to the role applying for have diminishing returns. - Share what was accomplished in previous roles - Results of previous roles transferability to future role Take a second and review your resume, might need to revise some things. Recruiters and Hiring Mgrs, anything you would add to the list?

๐พ SAVE THIS POST >> 3 Ways To Make A Visually Appealing Resume That Lands Interviews 73% of hiring managers say they are more likely to interview a candidate with a visually appealing resume. Yes, your resume needs to be ATS-optimized so it'll be scanned, parsed, and saved correctly in hiring software. You can't just write for bots thought! There are still humans looking at your resume before deciding if you'll land that interview. โจ Add Visual Elements Sparingly: While it's tempting to use graphics, images, or bold designs to make your resume stand out, these can confuse ATS systems. Instead, use subtle design elements like dividers or colored headings conservatively. โจ Utilize Color: Color fill, colored fonts, and bold or italicized fonts can be used to make your resume more visually appealing without causing issues with ATS. Stick to 1-2 similar colors to help guide the eyes across the page. โจ Vary Font Sizes: Using a larger font consistently for your name and section headings helps make your resume easy to skim.
