Secure access to rare Earth minerals is a critical national security issue for the United States, heavily reliant on minerals primarily found in China. DARPA has partnered with HyperSpectral, a company using AI to analyze spectroscopic data from satellites or drones to detect hard-to-find minerals. HyperSpectral, known for food safety applications, now aims to revolutionize mineral detection. CEO Matt Thereur explains that AI helps overcome the noisy nature of real-world samples, combining various spectroscopic analyses into a coherent data picture. This technology could vastly improve intelligence collection and defense applications, helping the Pentagon secure rare Earth materials and enhance front-line supplies. #nationalsecurity #rareearthminerals #AI #spectroscopy #defense #technology #DARPA #mineraldetection #Hyperspectral #Pentagon Source- https://lnkd.in/eaS7hQk3

Looking for companies interested in solving these problem: Space Launch Detection: Using unclassified novel data, fusion, and analytic techniques (seismic, ionospheric, infrasonic, GPS telemetry, RF, neutrino, other), detect space launches within seconds. Upon detection of a launch, predict the ascent trajectory, intermediate and final orbits. Provide these predictions to an SDA sensor as a “cue” to reacquire and track the launch vehicle within seconds-to-minutes. Investment in this technology is warranted as no launch detection or early “cueing” capability exists for the commercial SDA enterprise. Such a capability would enable rapid target acquisition, ID, and threat assessment of launches. Object Identification (ID): From a set of features (orbital data, photometry, radar cross section, RF emissions, other), classify and ID space objects within seconds. Evaluate potentially mis-identified objects which may be adversary intelligence payloads or weapons. Nominate these for further investigation. Attempts to evade detection, tracking, and ID complicate defense from an attack. Examples may include covert operations or payloads, active satellites appearing dead, inactive, as debris, or otherwise plausibly deniable operations. Investment in this technology is warranted as camouflage, concealment, and deception are fundamental to warfare. Such a capability would aid hostility assessments, response options, and prevent operational surprise. #sda #space #protectanddefend #ussf #launch #tracking #data #analysis #datascience #ai #ml

Since its invasion by Russia, Ukraine has become the most heavily mined country in the world. Using conventional de-mining methods, predictions say it would take 757 years to undo this damage that is not only putting Ukrainian lives at risk but would also prevent the country relaunching its economy. However Ukraine has ambitions to clear 80% of contaminated land over the next decade, and are doing so using AI. First, officials are creating a large database of information from varying government departments essential for clearing mines. This information will be accessed using an LLM like ChatGPT, and will be capable of answering specific requests using important real-time information such as whether transmission wires are live, or if schools or power plants are within a certain proximity. This, along with AI-powered drones, surveys, and both humans and hardware on the ground, makes up Ukraine’s demining arsenal that experts expect will revolutionise the way this humanitarian process is conducted in the future. I'm obsessed with Sci Fi predictions of technology. I've recently been watching UFO, a series where the earth organisation SHADO protects us from alien invasion. It was written late 1960s and broadcast in 1970 and 1971 for the first time but is set in the futuristic time of 1980. Man actually landed on the moon for the first time during filming. In the show's view by 1980 we have a base and at least one mining operation on the moon. Some rather advanced vehicles including a submarine with a jet attached to the front for underwater and air combat. There are some good predictions about video calling and computing but they are way ahead of when they actually became reality. The moon base is run by women (who only have purple hair when on the moon for some reason). Of recent interest there is an AI presence on the show, pictured here and called SID (Space Intruder Detector). Housed in his own satellite "he" is able to identify Alien attack craft (called UFOs although they have clearly been identified) from any other space debris and relay the threat level and co-ordinates in plain English to SHADO. A task that may be supported by technology today if it were required but I doubt the relaying of that information would be trusted to AI some 43 years later. Technology is always further away than we are led to believe. #technologypredictions #ai #ufo #scifi #scifiai

https://lnkd.in/gzfR7fz9 Explore the advantages and limitations of utilizing automated land change detection for ISR purposes and military applications. Many countries devote a large number of people to analyzing remote sensing images, but even with a large number of people, it is difficult to monitor all changes in the LARGE satellite imagery. In this article we have given a detailed explanation and some additional ideas. We agree that the change detection model currently provided by Deep Block needs improvement. But the development of new models is being delayed due to lack of capital. 😑 Anyway, Deep Block is available for free. Start your own change detection project now! We should expect to see more multilateral collaboration as nations with shared economic interests look to protect critical seabed infrastructure. Transmission of information, movement of oil, exploration, rare earth mineral mining operations, etc. all need to be protected at levels similar to those required to maintain open Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs). Vision AI that allows for highly-effective small object detection (e.g. YOLO), rapidly improving EO/IR sensors together with deep learning algorithms will enable vastly improved object discrimination (I need to be able to detect it, I need to be able to see it, I need to be able to tell what it is). However, because of underwater communications limitations (good ol' Mother Nature at it again!) and the high volume of trillions of operations per second (TOPS), edge processing will need to be done on-platform (vs. a cloud). Enhancements in chip design and materials will be required to support all of this - and by the way, such innovations will need to be done on-shore where supply and security is assured. In the end, this all comes down to physics (who, despite being constantly challenged, remains undefeated). A materials science "arms race" between heat dissipation, miniaturization, and power consumption rages on. Those who break this Iron Triangle will be well-positioned for long-term growth for decades to come. Thoughts?
