At face value, this video might look like a passionate football manager reflecting on a game, questioning decisions made by match officials (referees, VAR etc).
But, look a bit deeper - it is about the divide that exists between the East and West. It's that feeling of being an outsider because of where you live. People have a preconceived idea of who you are based on where you are from. And then there is the feeling of disenfranchisement, the reality is we don't have the same access to things as other areas do.
Growing up in South West Sydney, I understand this feeling well. Whenever I'd go to a public speaking competition held at private schools in Sydney's east. When I went to Sydney University. Even at some of my previous jobs.
The A-Leagues have an opportunity to shine a spotlight on all the beauty the west has to offer. As Marko Rudan articulated, our community is culturally diverse, passionate, ambitious - we add so much value to the country as a whole. Football can unite the community and can be the platform to exhibit the best of our community too.
👉 This means the way we talk about our communities in the media, how we call out language that is harmful, the standards we hold everyone too (no double standards) and make sure we have different perspectives at decision making tables.
Macarthur FC and Western Sydney Wanderers are a beacon of hope for football loving kids in the west but also too an example of the kind of quality you can expect to find in our growing suburbs.
