Hands up if you believe substitute teachers deserve and should be required to receive on- site and real- time coaching. After an energizing and values- aligned interview with Scoot Education, we are set in this mission. However, national studies represent an urengt need for this work. Cultivate Ed. provides daily, real time coaching and development for substitutes- many who are aspiring to join the next cohort of educators in our country. Missing 10% of instruction time might not sound like that much. You're still there for 90% of instruction, right? But it has a cumulative impact. "But missing even occasional days can have a profound effect: A student who misses two days a month beginning in kindergarten will have missed the equivalent of an entire year of school by 12th grade." This story provides a good look at the growing absenteeism rate that many school districts are seeing. For the 2021-2022 school year, Hutchinson Public Schools USD 308 reported a chronic absenteeism rate of 30.6% (KSDE K.S.A. 72-5178 Accountability Report 2021-2022). https://lnkd.in/gxZ2GPq6

“This is having a huge impact on our ability to rebound” from the pandemic, argues Amanda von Moos (she/her), executive director of Substantial Classrooms, an organization dedicated to better preparing and supporting substitute teachers in schools across the nation. To illustrate her point, she describes how “when no substitute is available, remaining teachers often have to do double duty — taking extra students in their classroom, or covering another class on their break — which can lead them to request days off in the future. Sometimes reading tutors or other specialists fill in, which means that extra support sessions — a priority to make up for pandemic learning losses — are canceled that day.” #Strategicstaffing approaches leverage teacher residents as site-based substitute teachers, maximizing the dollars already dedicated to covering teacher absences in district budgets. [#VoteReidSarris for state superintendent] This is a very unwise decision and will continue to drive folks out of the public school system. Right now Washington is spending $18k/year on each student. The average private school tuition in Washington is $12k/year. Is the public school offering 50% better? Or even equal? We are the product of public schools and believe a strong public school option is a basic right/utility for all students in Washington. And we support Reid Saaris and his attempt to reform our public school system. https://lnkd.in/gbtEfp-f

Another important data story from Sarah Mervosh on the role of chronic absenteeism in limiting learning recovery. Around one-third of students in low-income districts missed 18+ days of school last year. Overlay this with Timothy Daly's recent writing on heightened teacher absences, and you have a lot of kids losing 20% of instructional days in a year. No perfect answers, but heartening to see the recent study from the National Student Support Accelerator on District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS)which showed kids with tutors were more likely to come to school. We need to give kids and families a reason to believe they are loved and supported. https://lnkd.in/eCizYCb7

Parents – you are responsible for raising, educating and preparing your kids for life. There was a time when public schools did a decent job of the education part. Reading, writing, arithmetic and basic science were the standard. Discipline was enforced and bad behavior punished – I had my share of swats … anybody remember those big wooden paddles? And guess what, when I told my parents about the swats, they said, “good, I’m sure you deserved it.” Contrast that to today when parents and activists wet their pants over this type of discipline. Public schools with their bloated administrations are focusing on one side of the political spectrum, social trends, and debatable moral definitions at the expense of fundamental education. Clearly there are still good schools and teachers out there fighting to truly educate our kids. But they are being bullied and coerced to follow administration guidelines instead of their own judgement. So, what is a parent to do? 1. Get involved in your kid’s education. Discuss the school environment, topics, and processes at their school. 2. Supplement their education with your experiences and life lessons. It may not seem like it, but they hear you and you will see the results as they get older. 3. If you are not happy with what is going on at their school, then you have to make a decision. Home school, private school, or dedicate the necessary time to overcome the school’s deficiencies yourself. 4. Most importantly, teach your kids to: - be critical thinkers … so they won’t be fooled - be strong, independent, and questioning … so they don’t become sheep - have a strong moral foundation … so they can resist harmful social and cultural trends - understand America (strengths and weaknesses) and its founding … so they can resist the lies of socialism and communism - be physically fit and trained in a broad array of self defense options … so they have the confidence to say no to peer pressure - understand and appreciate tough love while also having compassion and empathy … so they can help the deserving as necessary As a bonus, maybe have them listen to “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, https://lnkd.in/gM3Z2-Dd – ha ha Stay strong, stay free

Americans recognize teacher shortage, back higher pay A survey conducted by PDK International reveals that a majority of Americans support increasing teacher pay and believe that teachers are undervalued. The survey, which has been conducted annually for 55 years, also shows mixed feelings on curriculum control. While 66% of respondents believe that teachers should have more say over what is taught in schools, 51% support state laws regarding what teachers can teach. The survey also found growing support for a four-day school week, with 53% of adults in favor of a shorter schedule. The CEO of PDK International, James L., notes that many Americans see the teacher shortage as a serious issue and believe that increasing pay is a solution. The survey did not specifically address recent laws banning certain topics in schools. Overall, the findings highlight the public's support for teachers and the need to uplift the teaching profession.
