I cried for a straight 10 mins and hugged Sajal Kushwah, our learner, who brought me this award from Bhopal and personally delivered it to me. Your dedication has not just educated us; It has transformed our children’s lives And the lives of our families too It is not a 40-under-40 or Legal 500 award, but validates 12 years of my pain and sacrifices that I suffered in building a business in a moment, and it means the world to me.     2.5 years back, when he took our courses, he was in early years of college, and did not have a laptop. His mother has brought him up by herself and was the sole breadwinner. Today, he runs a video editing agency that employs about 9 people, generates 5 lakh per month revenues, and has sponsored vacations and several other comforts for his mother. He also bought a house for his mother in Indore this year. He is still in final year of college! Yet to graduate, and already rocking it. My student brought me this so that I can always remember the impact that I am making, and use it as a propulsion force to power me forward. It made me think - there are thousands of senior professionals in India who are making a much bigger impact on the economy than I could ever do myself or even imagine. They are contributing to organisational growth, building teams, mentoring younger team members, generating employment in the country. Our country is growing because of them. Although they are contributing massively, their stories are unsung. They have not built their personal brand. In fact, SEBI has created a position of independent director on the boards of listed companies. Listed companies must appoint senior professionals who have at least 10 years or more experience in any area of business or profession to such positions. We have a huge scarcity of eligible independent directors who can be appointed, but even the 12000 professionals who are eligible are not able to secure appointments because they did not build their personal brand.    The public, or even their extended network, doesn't know about their contribution. Building a personal brand does not require you to be born with a mutant gene - it’s a process that takes 6 months. You can do it too. We are conducting a free online event this weekend and on Tuesday evening where we will show how you can complete certain pre-qualification criteria, build your personal brand and become an independent director of a listed company. When they said good B schools are all about practical learning, I didn't believe them until i joined Goa Institute Of Management. Every institute, course and Ed Tech startup claims that they're not about theory but about practical learning. Why would this be different? So here's what happened. We were given a case about Kanpur Confectioners Private Limited (KCPL), a traditional family business owned by the Gupta family. The Gupta family had received an offer from a market giant in biscuit manufacturing, APL to outsource the manufacturing of their biscuits. Whether the Gupta family would accept it or not ? Everyone had read the case before coming. In the class, there was no teaching. We jumped right into the discussion. The professor spoke for hardly 20% of the time. 80% was contributed by the students. The first question he asked was “Who are you?”. Everyone talked about their names and backgrounds. But everyone was wrong. “You are not a CA, you are Alok Kumar Gupta”, “You are not an engineer, you are Vivek Gupta” - these were the actual decision makers from the Gupta family. There was a role play at the “dinner table” where the students embodied these roles. It showed us something that was obvious but no one realised it - Decisions are never made purely rationally. It is always a mix of emotion and logic. This was a learning experience that can’t be replicated anywhere else. This was GIM Goa for you. When they say “Practical Learning”, they really mean it. The first lecture by our respected teacher Dr Bhat was like a booster shot in the blood, not a single second I remember when i took my concentration off my case. I never participated as a Paper Presenter in ICAI Conferences. I never participated in CA Students' National Talent Search Competitions, conducted by Students Skills Enrichment Board of ICAI. I never participated in any of the events conducted by WICASA Nagpur, neither as a Committee Member nor as a Student Volunteer. Yes, I have a huge fear of presenting myself in public - I know that sounds weird for a social media personality (aka influencer) but can't help it ;) Since the day I started writing on LinkedIn, I could probably say that I'm learning the art of crafting the good LinkedIn posts. Yet, despite all this online confidence, there’s one thing that terrifies me: "PRESENTING MYSELF IN PERSON" 🙂 I know what you're thinking after reading all this. Like how can someone who talks to thousands of followers daily on comments, who post contents on LinkedIn, be terrified of public? This is crazy, to be honest 🤯 On social media, my audience is invisible. They are numbers on a screen, comments and likes on a post. I know they’re real people, but I don’t have to face them directly. This makes it easier for me to be bold and confident. In a live setting, however, I see every single face. Each pair of eyes feels like a laser beam of judgment. My mind races with questions like - Are they bored? 👀 Are they judging my outfit? 👀 Did I just say something stupid? 👀 But what I’ve learned is that it’s better to be real than to be perfect! 💯 Being a social media influencer doesn't mean I have it all together, especially when it comes to public. It’s a whole different ballgame :D So next time you see me posting a confident selfie or a funny video, just remember: behind the screen, I’m probably practicing my speech in front of the mirror, hoping I don’t freeze up 🤧 And that’s perfectly fine. Because being real is way better than being perfect. People will love you for who you are, not for who you pretend to be! ❤️🫂 Mayank Agarwal
