Gas dynamics was one of my favorite subjects in graduate school, and I am more than intrigued by the sonic boom-less supersonic plane that will be unveiled by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration on Jan 12th. These angles are calculated using pi-based formulas. ✈ Compressor Stages: Each compressor stage in a jet engine involves intricate geometry. Pi helps engineers determine blade spacing, airfoil shapes, and flow dynamics. ✈ Thrust-to-Weight Ratio: Pi factors into the thrust-to-weight ratio, a critical parameter for aircraft performance. Balancing thrust and weight ensures efficient flight. 🚀 NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration also uses pi to map the Moon, measure Earth’s surface changes, and calculate asteroid orbits. Some pretty interesting news for #Chicago today. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration will be performing an AEROMMA (Atmospheric Emissions and Reactions Observed from Megacities to Marine Areas) test today over the Windy City. Using a DC-8 jetliner flying at low altitudes, the goal is to better understand current urban emissions and chemical formation of major air pollutants. It's also called "the world's largest flying chemistry lab". The jetliner is coming from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base at some point this morning. Other cities included on the test include Los Angeles, New York City, and Toronto. Check out the diagram below for flight patterns. #Aerospace #ScienceandTechnology

Over a half-century ago, the U.S. banned commercial planes from flying at supersonic speeds over the nation to protect us from the thunderous, jolting shock waves created when a plane breaks the speed of sound (some 767 mph), events aptly called sonic booms. For those who haven't experienced such an atmospheric blast from the likes of a military craft, it's like the sound of an explosion, NASA explains. Now, the space agency seeks to tame these booms. On Jan. 12, NASA revealed its much anticipated X-59 aircraft, a nearly 100-foot-long experimental craft that will zoom at 925 mph high above several U.S. communities. (The craft will fly at 55,000 feet; most commercial airliners fly at some 35,000 feet.) Rather than creating a thunderclap, engineers hope the specially designed craft will produce "barely audible" thump sounds, perhaps similar to closing a car door. Ultimately, the aviation industry might one day use this aeronautics innovation to cut flight times across the U.S. or elsewhere in half — though big questions loom around the economic viability of supersonic flight. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration has selected Lockheed Martin to develop and build the nation's next generation weather satellite constellation, Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO), for the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. The baseline contract is for three spacecraft with options for four additional spacecraft. The total estimated value of the contract including options is $2.27 billion. The GeoXO mission will continue and expand upon critical observations of weather provided by the Lockheed Martin-built GOES-R Series geostationary satellites to include new observations of our oceans and air pollution. GeoXO's new capabilities will deliver more accurate weather forecasting and address emerging environmental issues and challenges that threaten our economy and safety. GeoXO and the nation's weather satellites are vital infrastructure for national resilience.

Instruments and researchers from #NASAMarshall are participating in the ALOFT project that is using NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's ER-2 aircraft to fly above Central America, the Caribbean, and the coast of Florida - all hotspots for thunderstorm activity this time of year. From just above the height of a thundercloud, the team expects to collect detailed data that can advance the study of high-energy radiation emissions from thunderstorms. US space agency NASA is flying an aircraft -- a helicopter capable of flying in alien atmosphere -- in Mars. The 1.8 kg chopper, called Ingenuity, nicknamed "Ginny", is part of NASA's Perseverance rover which was launched in 2020 and is still active on Mars. The man who designed the aircraft is Dr J Bob Balaram -- an Indian citizen currently working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Ingenuity is a marvel of technology, weighing merely 1.8 kg, It is made of ultra-light weight carbon fibre and is just half a meter tall. The density of air on Mars in about one-hundredth of Earth's at sea level, or the density of air at 27,000 meters above earth, an altitude never reached by existing helicopters. To fly Ingenuity the blades rotate at 2400 and 2900 rpm, or about 10 times faster than any helicopter on Earth. Ingenuity is an experiment of sorts to test powered, controlled flight on another world for the first time.

Key questions coming away from the X-59 Quesst reveal: (1) Will the sound attenuation achieved by NASA and Lockheed via the X-59 be enough to prove sufficient for the civilians the airplane is designed to fly over? (hopefully yes), and (2) Will the lack of a forward-facing window in the X-59’s flight deck - and the window's replacement with high resolution cameras feeding a monitor (see details below) - ultimately prove safe enough to accommodate civilian commercial flight?
