🚨 Exciting news alert! 👇👇👇 🎉 Congratulations to yingnan lei , Prof. Claudia Spits and all co-authors on our latest publication in Stem Cell Reports, entitled “ SALL3 mediates the loss of neuroectodermal differentiation potential in human embryonic stem cells with chromosome 18q loss” 📌This study show that loss of 18q and downregulation of SALL3 leads to changes in the expression of genes involved in pathways regulating pluripotency and differentiation, suggesting that these cells are in an altered state of pluripotency. 📌Please feel free to dive into the full article, and share it (https://lnkd.in/eJrcKWZR). #VUB #stemcells #stemcellreports

EDUCATION HOUR 📖 Definition of a stem cell: A cell with the ability to self-replicate and differentiate into less primitive cell types. 💡Did you know that there are different kinds of stem cells? ➡️ What are induced pluripotent stem cells? Adult cells are genetically reprogrammed to biochemically resemble an embryonic cell. #stemcell #stemcellstherapy #stemcellresearch #stemcelltechnology

🆕 We are more than happy to welcome to our Institute Dr. Vincenzo Calvanese, a well-recognized and consolidated researcher on #StemCell biology. Dr. Calvanese will lead the new “Blood Stem Cell Identity” group. They will try to understand which molecular features and regulatory processes identify a #BloodStemCell, a fundamental knowledge to advance in many areas, like haematopoietic stem cell transplant, one of the few successful clinical applications of stem cells today. Calvanese and his team join forces with IJC in the fight against #leukaemia 💪 Know more about his research in this article ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eWS9BR2n

A recent article in The FASEB Journal investigated the SETD3 protein and its role in the development of specific cell types from embryonic stem cells. Researchers found that the protein is important for proper cell development, particulary in the context of Wnt signaling pathway. The pathway regulates crucial aspects of cell fate determination, cell migration, cell polarity, neural patterning and organogenesis during embryonic development. Your baby’s cord blood stem cells are a guaranteed match for him/her. It is also a ready source of genetically related stem cells for someone else in the family. Studies have shown that patients who underwent treatments using cord blood from a family member had a 95% survival rate as compared to 61% for patients who underwent treatments using unrelated cord blood*. Unlike other stem cell treatments such as bone marrow transplants, which require a perfect match between donor and patient, the probability of finding a match among family members using cord blood stem cells is much higher. By storing the cord blood from each child, parents can increase the chance of locating a match within the family.
