"Separating batteries from buses would enable swapping operators to own the batteries instead of the bus owner, dramatically reducing the bus' capital cost" writes Bhaumik Gowande, Associate Researcher at The International Council on Clean Transportation in Hindustan Times. A good idea at first but comes with challenges like 1. The huge amount of money needed for setting up large scale battery swapping infrastructure. 2. Compatibility (in terms of BMS and size) of swappable batteries from different manufacturers for same vehicle. 3. Reduced reliability (in terms of driving range) over battery lifetime as one would never know the actual state of battery unless it is in use.

Battery swapping is good idea theoretically but has to be proven yet in Indian local conditions in Buses and Trucks. Initial trials had some issues so time to have another experiment in Heavy commercial vehicles.

Hi- But then wouldn’t you need to have 2x-3x batteries, as some will be charging and others are in use. Surely this increases the overall cost even if the bus owner has lower costs
