I attended a tech lecture in York this week, detailing how Investec bank uses AI in their business. The event was hosted by https://techyork.uk/. At the end of ’22 Investec asked Microsoft for early access to OpenAI to allow them to use the LLM in their own hosted Azure environment. Over the next few months they created the ChatGPT2.5-4 app for internal use, hiding the complex model parameters that can be tweaked, such as temperature, from staff. It launched Feb 14 ’23. They ran AI drop-in "discovery" sessions to educate employees on how they could use it in their roles which amplified its use within the organisation. The private model environment allowed, in one use case, them to submit sensitive documents to the app and use natural language queries to summarise and analyse them. They found it saves 80% of time getting the AI to write reports based on these documents which allows more time for actual client human interactions to push sales. They call their implementation ZebraGPT. They did not add to the LLM that MS provided (the ChatGPT models) because it contained pretty much everything they needed it to know for their typical prompts & they could provide it ad hoc knowledge by uploading extra documents for any other specific interactions. They also added natural-language enabled calls to .Net APIs, so the bot could send emails etc. The speaker did not fully quantify running costs. He did say that running queries against the ChatGPT 2.5 model cost “nothing” so they are trying to steer staff to only use the more costly ChatGPT 4 model for more complex interactions, but he did not provide usage costs against this model. The implementation is a symptom of its own success really. The staff use Copilot too. There is an aim to free up to 30% of staff time using the AI tools. Lots of questions from the audience on data control, governance, cost, copyright violation, legislation, quality control of the provided answers… It’s all pretty new though so these are only just starting to be addressed.
