VESSEL REVIEW: Albwardy Damen in the UAE recently handed over a new ASD harbour tug to Polish towage company WUZ Port and Maritime Services. 'Pax' was designed in compliance to Polish flag requirements to satisfy the demand for a compact, highly manoeuvrable tug that is also capable of delivering a high bollard pull. Its main area of operations is the Polish port of Gdansk where it will provide escort and ship handling of tankers, container vessels, bulk carriers, and drilling rigs. It will also be used as a terminal support tug for a future LNG import and regasification facility that will be built in the same area. Although measuring only 28.57 by 11.43 metres to allow efficient navigation in port waters, the tug can achieve a bollard pull of over 60 tonnes as well as a maximum speed of 13.7 knots, thanks to its two 1,902kW main engines. What is the purpose of towage? In the maritime industry, towage refers to the moving of a stricken vessel with the aid of another, usually a powerful tug or towboat. A stricken vessel is one that cannot move using its own power and therefore needs assistance from a towing vessel.

#didyouknow that some vessels are designed to berth without tugboat assistance? Berthing requires control of the vessel’s heading and speed. For large (> 150 meters) vessels this normally implies making fast at least one tug. The tug is made fast at the stern of the vessel. The aft tug controls the vessel’s speed. The vessel can use it’s engine to keep pressure on the rudder without speeding up. Vessels that have a controllable pitch propeller (CPP) have more control of their speed. If a CPP vessel is equipped with a powerful bow thruster and a high angle rudder, the vessel can berth without the assistance of a tug in normal wind conditions. Berthing without a tug is more challenging as there is no “brake” available. Thus approach speeds must be low as the vessel will have to stop by itself.
