This can hinder the recognition and support of mental health professionals. While I offer sliding scale fees for students and those in need, it's crucial to respect therapy as a professional service that requires fair compensation to maintain high-quality care. APPA is excited to announce that we have co-published the first Professional Practice Guidelines for Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy with BrainFutures. These guidelines are designed to address the evolving practice of psychedelic-assisted therapy, as a set of comprehensive guidelines for mental health providers practicing psychedelic-assisted therapy. The process of drafting these guidelines generated robust debate and consensus around professional standards for this treatment modality. They describe a benchmark of high-quality care as informed by existing clinical research and expert consensus in this area. The Professional Practice Guidelines are part of a “living document” that will be updated as the field’s understanding of best practices evolves. Future versions of this document are not intended to stand alone in perpetuity, but to be incorporated into general guidance for professionals working in the mental health field. 📚 In a thought-provoking article published in Psychology Today, author and licensed clinical social worker Nancy Colier critiques the widespread use of the term “trauma.” She believes it's often used as a catch-all label for any challenges or inconveniences we feel shouldn't happen to us. This misuse, she argues, can trivialize the true meaning of trauma as defined by the American Psychiatric Association, which involves exposure to “actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence,” or profoundly distressing events that emotionally overwhelm an individual. According to Colier, "real trauma is a devastating, painful, and life-changing experience." It shouldn't be equated with common inconveniences like a difficult boss, a bad date, or even a discontinued menu item.
