With a foot in both the public and day school systems, I’m surprised at the college selection trends this year. I may be generalizing but it appears that day school students are more reluctant to pull their top tier applications than their public school peers. Insulated day school students, forever motivated by the name brand, have generally never faced the various degrees of anti semitism that public school students have always dealt with. They also have an attitude of ‘tensions will die down by the time I get to campus’ (after their gap year) ignoring the astonishing depth of anti semitism and hatred on campuses. What are you seeing out there? Are public school Jews more realistic, grounded, and prepared to make a conscientious decision than their day school peers?

Insightful data-driven article on how legacy admission policies, structures and systems at Ivy League schools (favoring kids of status) actually work leading to double and triple-digit probability of access to favorable outcomes for the top 1% earners of influence. More importantly, the research by Chetty shows the three primary factors that lead to acceptance (I.e., legacy status of parents, elite athletics background, and non-academic extracurriculars such as attending private schools) are NOT based on merit and are NOT predictors of success to achieve being a top earner. Read this article for recommendations on how we might move forward. Love to hear your thoughts! https://lnkd.in/gVZwj9Rm

Fear. It’s often the Number 1 reason families don’t make the change from public schools they know aren’t serving their kids well. ✅ What if my child is “messed up”? ✅ Will they get into college? ✅ Will they receive a high school diploma? What if they don’t? ✅ Is alternative ed “real” school? Most of these fears are misplaced. Most of these fears stem from a familiarity with public school, and a comfort with the status quo. After all, most adults went to public school. So we continue to send our children and teens to public schools we know make them miserable and bored, where their autonomy is nil and the curriculum full of busywork they’ll never remember as soon as the test is over. It just makes we adults more comfortable. Listen to how Diego Gunter, current 10th grader at TSE, left behind his fear of the unknown and embraced a more purposeful life at TSE.

Helping higher education build communities to scale support and improve student outcomes | Co-founder and CEO at InScribe |
Incredible session today with Russell Lowery-Hart, Pascale Charlot, and Joshua Wyner about the critical work community colleges are doing in higher education. Particularly inspired to think about how we can better support transfer students coming from high school or going on to 4 year institutions. Today - roughly 80% of community college students want to go on to get a BA. Only 16% actually do. How can we change this statistic?
