If you or someone you know is on the board of an institution of higher learning you need to listen to this episode of Pivot.
Scott Galloway gives a masterful breakdown of how universities can STILL provide opportunities for disadvantaged candidates.
Higher education provides a path to incredible opportunities and the promise of a better life. Expanding access to these opportunities is where university leadership needs to be focused. Changing curriculums, programs, use of endowments, and admissions criteria can make immeasurable impacts on individuals and the future of the US.
The "middle class" is becoming a dream for more and more young people, and the way they've been told to attain it is through a college degree.
The two lines that hit me in the gut:
- "You're a son of California...and we're gonna let you in"
- "No organization can predict greatness at the age of 18"
Public universities should be providing opportunities to as many sons and daughters of their state as possible. It's how we build the labor force we need to power our future while helping as many of our citizens as possible.

That's right...prospective Dordt students with a parent using CampusESP had yield rates ***13% higher than average*** 😍

As parents and prospective students plan for campus visits, here are some tips for maximizing the benefits of these trips.
DO's:
1. Walk around the campus; meet with admission officers. Interaction is essential for a holistic view of the institution.
2. Encourage your child to ask questions. It not only reveals details about the school but also displays their enthusiasm.
3. Follow up with the admissions office after the visit. It signifies genuine interest and can positively impact admission decisions.
4. Reflection is important. Jot down thoughts, impressions, and take photos for future reference.
DON'Ts:
1. Don't restrict visits to reach schools. Explore diverse options to help your child find the best right-fit.
2. Don't limit the visit to the formal tour. Encourage your child to experience the campus culture, interact with students, sit in on a class, or meet faculty.
Remember, the goal is to determine if your child would feel comfortable and excited to be on this campus for the next four years.

📚 I'm kicking off 2024 with a great read! "The Adjunct Underclass" offers academic advisors an opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the systemic issues within higher education, empowering them to advocate for positive change and contribute to a more supportive and equitable academic environment for faculty and students. Here are a few key takeaways:
Understanding Faculty Dynamics: Academic advisors play a crucial role in supporting faculty members, including adjunct professors. By delving into the struggles faced by adjuncts, advisors can gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics within the academic community, fostering empathy and informed guidance.
Impact on Student Experience: The challenges faced by adjunct professors can directly influence the quality of education and the overall student experience. Academic advisors can use insights from the book to better understand how these challenges may affect the advising environment and the educational journey of their students.
Facilitating Conversations: The book serves as a conversation starter about the broader issues within higher education. Academic advisors can use the insights from the book to facilitate discussions within the academic community, encouraging a more transparent dialogue about the challenges faced by faculty and potential avenues for improvement.
