Thirty one years ago today, Black teenager Stephen Lawrence, 18, was murdered in a racist attack in South-East London as he was waiting at the bus stop for the bus home.
Tragically he never made it home.
He was killed on the streets of Britain for being Black.
What followed through the immense courage and bravery of Stephen’s parents and family was a forced reckoning in Britain about racism, institutional racism, and corruption in the Metropolitan Police.
Racism is about dehumanising systems of power and control.
We all have a role to play in challenging, tackling and dismantling the conditions that give permission for racism to devalue, dehumanise and disregard the sacridness of lives labelled as “other.”
Have you asked yourself what your role is in this struggle? What work you are responsible for starting and doing alongside everyone else?
This poem by Josephine Corcoran has impacted me hugely since I read it in 2023.
Rest in peace and power, Stephen Lawrence. You will always be remembered and treasured 💜
Stephen Lawrence isn't on the national curriculum by Josephine Corcoran.
