So for those of you who are considering going to Film School... Education is the food of the soul, but school isn't always the best environment for eating it… There's no official route into the Film Industry. Film school is one avenue. Perhaps some might consider it a good avenue. But it’s an avenue that involves spending an inordinate amount of money and potentially putting yourself in a great deal of debt for a qualification that is rarely of value in the industry. Alternatively, complete a short film production and you have yourself an entry ticket to the world of cinema. Red Diesel is for those who flourish in the school of hard knocks. We provide professional equipment to filmmakers with guidance and assistance every step of the way. It goes without saying that this style of self education isn’t for everyone. But we hope to pry open the gates of the industry for those who need only the tools to learn and the will to do so. Our Short Film Packages are tailored to every level of expertise. A shoot technician assigned to your project provides professional consultation and guidance on all aspects of Pre-Production. Once you have built this foundation and you feel ready to move into Production, your shoot technician takes on the role of a hands-on assistant, at your side from first to last take. #motivation #education #film

I felt I had to post this because it gave me a great self reflection at how far I've come in my career. I'm frequently asked the question of how I got into my field as an Audio-visual professional. Did you go to college or a trade school for it? My typical response is well I went to college for music technology and earned certifications which I feel leaves folks scratching their heads. What I wish I could say is this. Let me paint a picture for you. It's 2016, I just graduated college with a music degree and have no clue what I'm doing with my life. I'm applying to hundreds of jobs in the music industry or studio production space with no response. It was then after months of searching and disappointment, I took a moment to simply put myself out there. I posted my resume publicly on monster, for all to see and a recruiter found it and called me directly to see if I had an interest in an audio/visual support technician role. I was honest and said I have no experience, the recruiter said no I didn't ask if you had experience, just if you were up to the job, if you think that you can do it, and learn. I took a big step out of my comfort zone and said yes and was hired as an onsite audiovisual support technician for a large financial investment corporate campus as my first gig in the AV world. This is how I broke into the industry and got my background. Putting myself out there, taking a step outside my comfort zone, and learning in the field on the job. Once I did this and put in the work a whole world opened for me. I dove into AV/IT certifications, cable termination, DSP configuring and tuning, AV Control system configuration, learning how to maintain systems and prevent future AV issues, running AV systems for end users in conference rooms set up for extremely important large scale meetings, the list goes on. It wasn't always easy however I took each challenge as a learning opportunity to better myself. The AV industry doesn't come with a clearcut handbook. To this day I cannot imagine where I'd be in life if I hadn't taken that leap and left my comfort zone. That is the true answer of how I got into the AV industry and I'm still learning all I can to this day. If you made it this far thanks for listening.

3 Tips for a video shoot. 1. Create a script or at least an outline of what you want to say or show in the video. It helps you stay on track and ensures you cover all the necessary points. 2. Ensure your camera and lenses are clean and in working condition. Plan your lighting setup. Natural light is great, but invest in softbox lights for indoor shoots. 3. Clearly define roles for each team member, including director, camera operator, sound technician, etc.

In the Queensland government, job titles often fall short in capturing the breadth of our roles. My title might not scream creativity, but my daily tasks certainly do! From crafting intricate graphics to motion design, animations, filming captivating video series, post-production magic, editing, photographing, and engaging with schools, every day is a new adventure. It's a role that's far from one-size-fits-all. While my title may seem mundane, the work is anything but. It's rewarding, fun, and diverse. I thrive in the variety and challenges it brings, and every day brings something new and exciting. Who says job titles have to define us? #QueenslandGovernment #CreativityUnleashed #DiverseRoles #RewardingCareer #EmbraceVariety #JobTitlesDontDefineMe

Right now, filmmaking feels more and more like the the transition to digital in the NYC indie film world of the 1990s, an era I worked in. I was in development and post then. Due to the rapid development of new digital technology for post, over the decade our independent film editing crews were reduced from ten to two workers, sound crews went from four to one, and apprentice editors, a key entry-level position, largely disappeared as much of their work assisting editors became obsolete. In hiring, we found editors also needed less experience and more tech savvy, so they were often younger and often fresh out of school. Not only did their ability to work with the new technology provide amazing opportunities to newer editors, for some, it also led to long lasting careers. The change in technology, however, ended many careers for older, more experienced editors unable to make the transition. I also hear echoes from the 1920s and the transition to sound. I always think about the musicians who played in theatres for silent films but then lost that work with that change. his 1929 essay, “The Vanishing Fiddler,” musician Maurice Mermey wrote: "The past music season was a disastrous one for the union men. It is reliably estimated that perhaps 40 percent of New York's 16,000 musicians were jobless during the winter; and a similar unemployment situation, though not quite so acute, prevailed in the other large cities... According to the present view of the situation, men will be supplanted by machines in virtually every house in the country now employing musicians." Teaching filming skills to people (in marketing or any industry) is something I've always enjoyed. It's a big debate in our industry because it feels like your doing away with the camera operator's/videographer's job (same thing happened with sound recordist 20 years ago, now most camera ops record their own sound) but budgets will always drive us to upskill our workforce where tech allows. Like the sound recorder argument though when the importance and budget of a project dictates most people will still go to a skilled specialist, just means us skilled specialists have to work a bit harder at our craft. #marketing #videography #teaching #digitalmarketin #filmmaking #education #filmschool
