I know I'm a bit late on posting this...but I've been teaching in Ireland the past few weeks (and unfortunately had to miss graduation due to travel)... -------------------------------------------------------- I am happy to announce that the winner of the inaugural Michael M. Stanisic Mechanical Systems Award is Grace Beauchamp!!! Grace graduated from Notre Dame with her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (and also received a degree from Saint Mary's last year). She was an officer in the Robotic Football Club, helped to design and build the new starting Center for the team, participated in a variety of design courses including an independent design project this past semester, and most importantly she exhibited many of the characteristics that Mike would have loved to see in his students: passionate, kind, curious, always wanting to learn as much as possible...not just for a grade but because she understood the importance of the knowledge for her future career. For me personally, Grace was the first student that came to my office to introduce herself when I returned to ND as a faculty member. She is a truly amazing individual and probably one of my favorite students in my 15 years of academia (don't worry network...I have lots of favorites 😉). I'm sad that she has graduated and left Notre Dame, but I couldn't think of anyone better to win this award and know she will accomplish so much in her life. Here is a picture of Grace being awarded the trophy by Mike's three beautiful daughters: Lauren Stanisic Emily and Olivia.

Teach Biomechanics in the morning at University College Dublin and then hike the cliffs at Howth in the afternoon with some of the most amazing students in the world... Does anyone really NOT believe me when I always answer, "Living the dream!" when asked how I'm doing today?

I mentioned in a recent post about the creation of the Michael M. Stanisic Mechanical Systems Award. Here is the link to donate to this new award: https://lnkd.in/gGUw3U5f All donations will be used to support student awards and cannot be used for any other purposes...just like Mike would have wanted. Along with a financial award, students will receive a description of the award, a short biography about Mike, and an explanation of the trophy that each award winner will receive (a 3D prototype is pictured here). The trophy is based on the Constrained Steward Platform mechanism that Mike and Dr. Jadran Lenarcic (of the Jozef Stefan Institute in Slovenia) designed in the 1990's. The purpose was to augment robotic shoulders to incorporate movements similar to a human's shoulder girdle (the scapula and clavicle portion that allows us to shrug and reposition the shoulder center). We thought it was a fitting reminder of Mike's contributions to the world of mechanical systems. Any support you can provide to this new award or to any other organization at Notre Dame is most appreciated. Go Irish!!!!
