Cradle is a Dutch company utilising #MachineLearning to design and improve properties of proteins/enzymes. This blog by Cradle (part 1 --> https://lnkd.in/e3t5q4DE) lists ways biotech companies apply #ProteinEngineering solutions to #SustainableFuture such as food production, fragrances, cosmetics, textiles, biofuels, plastic recycling, decarbonisation etc. There is this San Francisco based startup Aether Bio that is exploring enzymatic ways to mine lithium (for batteries) in a cleaner, greener way!!! As I was going through these blogs, I was thinking of Indian #Biotechs making strides in this space, i.e. specifically using protein engineering to address goals towards sustainable future. Probably India is not lagging behind… I could think of (some of them are guesses based on information from websites).. When a microbe was found munching on a plastic bottle in a rubbish dump, it promised a recycling revolution. Now scientists are attempting to turbocharge those powers in a bid to solve our waste crisis. But will it work? A really interesting long read from The Guardian introduces to us how Japanese scientists first discovered bacterium Ideonella sakaiensis and its ability to enzymatically degrade plastics like PET. Exploring the role of using compostable packaging in helping to divert food waste and other materials from landfills is now the focus of cities across North America (SPC 2022). According to the report released on March 2023, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) sets a goal of replacing 90% fossil fuel-based plastics with bio-based alternatives over the coming two decades (Plastic news).

Biodegradation by microorganisms is a promising solution. The scientists identified two PET-degrading enzymes and found that boosting bacteria's biofilm formation on plastic can enhance enzyme concentration, accelerating plastic degradation. In a groundbreaking development, scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have made significant strides in addressing the global plastic waste crisis. By leveraging the microbiomes found in the guts of Zophobas atratus worms, commonly known as 'superworms,' researchers have crafted an innovative 'artificial worm gut' system to expedite the process of plastic degradation. This method holds immense potential, particularly due to the efficiency gains over previous approaches reliant on the worms themselves—where practical limitations of feeding rates and maintenance made large-scale application unfeasible. This fresh approach isolates potent bacteria from the superworms' gut, adept at breaking down sturdy plastics such as HDPE, polypropylene, and polystyrene, which are pervasive in various consumer products. The NTU team's method entails cultivating these bacteria in controlled conditions, resulting in focused microbial communities that are more adept at degrading specific types of plastics. As the research advances, these findings herald a transformative shift, promising more efficient and scalable solutions for plastic waste management, aligning with NTU's commitment to innovation encapsulated within its NTU2025 strategic plan. As the world grapples with the relentless increase in plastic pollution, this technique offers a beacon of hope for more sustainable practices. The NTU scientists' success in amplifying plastic-degrading bacteria in an artificial environment could very soon translate into practical applications that could revolutionize the recovery and recycling of plastic materials. A potentially revolutionary innovation that needs more government backing. There are lots of pitfalls and uncertainties associated with this biotechnology, but it looks promising and requires state funding for R&D and pilot projects to scale up. As the article underscores, the best existing way to get rid of plastic is incineration, which produces large amounts of CO2. The problem could be solved with carbon capture equipment, but if the proposed biotechnology can recycle plastic with lower carbon footprint and generate re-usable product, then it could be more benefitial than simply burning plastic and capturing the associated carbon dioxide.
