Dr. Elisa Altieri tells me that this is a reflection of the company’s “commitment to comprehensive sustainability. “Each method,” she says, “contributes unique benefits, and by integrating various approaches, we can address diverse environmental and societal challenges. Specializing in one or two methods might limit our ability to adapt to evolving sustainability standards and could overlook potential opportunities for innovation and improvement.” And she tells me that “there is a growing demand for upcycled ingredients as consumers and the industry increasingly prioritize circular economy models. Beyond the environmental benefits of reducing waste,” Altieri points out that “upcycled ingredients often bring unexpected advantages, such as unique textures and properties. Sometimes the biggest scientific breakthroughs come from where you would least expect – like a garbage heap. The Guardian details biological recycling’s humble origins – dating back to 2001 when Japanese scientists made the discovery that certain enzymes could break down plastic waste. Fast forward to today: our team is leveraging AI to engineer similarly unique enzymes that can convert plastic waste in a process that is quicker, cleaner, and at a larger scale than ever before. One of the most rewarding and challenging parts of working in sustainability is the hidden complexity behind each problem. In many cases, seemingly great solutions can bring a whole host of new problems if they aren't considered carefully, and from a holistic lens. For example, take microplastics in packaging; removing this plastic sounds great, but many of its worst impacts come not from the plastic itself, but the additives (chain extenders, rheology modifiers, antioxidants, UV blockers, etc.). This means even “green” biodegradable and biocompatible materials can still have adverse environmental effects if they are not formulated carefully!
