Bike share creates new cyclists, saves people money 🚲 A new report out of the U.K. highlights how bike share systems lead to healthier outcomes and more equal communities. "At the Better Bike Share Partnership, we’ve never doubted the positive impact bike share can have on communities, especially when deployed equitably. Have you ever wondered “How can I affect change in government and community attitudes to bicycle riders?" (apart from being a BQ member!) Have you ever thought of joining a Bicycle User Group (BUG)? BUGs are community based groups set up by bike riders.  There are three types:  Local BUGs: These are usually defined by a geographical area e.g. town, city or council based Workplace BUGs: Are based in a workplace e.g. hospital, government department or business park. Campus BUGs: Can be based in a place of education e.g. University/TAFE College. As you would expect, BUGS often organise social rides, but they are also a forum for cyclists to meet and discuss local bike issues, while working with the local government (councils etc) to improve cycling conditions in their area. Because of their local knowledge, they can be effective in working with planners and decision makers.  They truly are grassroots, and have a certain amount of ‘power’ because of that. Bicycle Queensland worked with our members on the Gold Coast to set up a new BUG this year. That group now has more than 250 people in their group, and has connected with State and local government decision-makers about their list of suggestions to make bike-riding safer and more convenient on the Gold Coast. I usually keep this type of post for my Strava network, but there is a very interesting story about teamwork, trust and humility. I came across a bike ride route shaping France a few months ago. So I asked if anyone from the cycling club would be interested in doing it. The ride was planned for mid-September with six other mad cyclists. Interestingly, this experience shows how I submitted the project and then lost "control" of it. Pre-ride: Someone carefully reviewed and changed the route to avoid road works or off-road cycle paths. Another took care of the feed stops, identifying shops or petrol stations at strategic distance points. Last prep: the day before, the group checked that all the members were ready and got the spare kit and nutrition sorted. Then, during the ride, everyone contributed to work at the front. Experienced riders monitor power output and speed for a smoother pace. Keeping the group tight against the wind. I was enjoying to do some French Geography along the way. Then come the time when I'm not talking anymore. I think we are in the middle of the Pyrenees and the finish is in Bordeaux, still a long way to go. That is where you notice the teamwork, the folks coming in front of me as I cannot take turns anymore. Taking me in their wheel, checking on me as I'm digging deep to keep going. Why keep it going? For them, if I stop, I know they'll stop too and I don't want to stop them. The ultimate trust is to keep your front wheel 20-30cm from the back wheel of the rider in front knowing it is safe to just focus on this and forget about the rest. To all cyclists around Cambridge, I highly recommend that ride. Some people (including me) believe that I'm a good cyclist. In Northeast Wisconsin, the surge in cycling community and infrastructure has been further propelled by organizations like WEBIKE, etc. Through initiatives focused on engineering, education, enforcement, and encouragement, WEBIKE, etc. has been instrumental in promoting walking, bicycling, and overall community health. Alongside the efforts of WEBIKE, etc., the region has witnessed the emergence of more bike lanes, multi-use paths, and community-driven cycling events. These developments not only encourage recreational cycling but also position cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation. Community events such as organized group rides and charity cycling events, often supported by WEBIKE, etc., have played a pivotal role in fostering a sense of camaraderie among cyclists and raising awareness about the benefits of cycling. Moreover, local governments and organizations, in collaboration with WEBIKE, etc., have been proactive in integrating cycling into broader transportation planning efforts. By incorporating bike-friendly features into road designs, implementing bike-sharing programs, and advocating for bicycle-friendly policies, Northeast Wisconsin, with the support of WEBIKE, etc., is creating a conducive environment for cyclists of all levels. This surge in cycling activity reflects a growing commitment to promoting active lifestyles and building healthier, more sustainable communities throughout the region. 📣 Hot off the press! Sustrans Latest Walking and Cycling Index launches today and evidences that people living in our cities would like MORE investment to make it easier to walk, wheel and cycle for more everyday journeys. Bringing together results from Scotland’s eight cities the results tell us: - 57% of people in Scotland’s cities walk or wheel at least five days a week - 22% say they would like to drive less - 48% of residents want to walk or wheel more - 72% of residents support banning pavement parking - 71% of residents think wider pavements would help them to walk or wheel more.   These results show that local decision-makers have the backing of the public to build on the work they have already started and prioritise improvements to pavements and roads, giving everyone the choice to get around by walking, wheeling or cycling.   I’d like to thank the thousands of people across Scotland who gave us their time to take part in this assessment. https://lnkd.in/edaKeWAg
