Building Defense Research Capacity at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and Minority-Serving Institutions: Proceedings of Three Town Halls A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a series of three hybrid workshops to examine the key issues highlighted in the National Academies 2022 consensus study report, Defense Research Capacity at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Other Minority Institutions: Transitioning from Good Intentions to Measurable Outcomes. As Department of Defense and other partners sought to implement the 2022 report recommendations, key questions remained to be explored, particularly related to how to seek ways of building research capacity at minority institutions (MIs) and develop true partnerships between MIs, other institutions of higher education, and federal agencies. The workshops featured commissioned research and literature reviews as well as case studies to illuminate problems, barriers, and approaches to increase research capacity at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Dean of Academics USM International Consultant & CEO of Propel Ltd| Former Minister of Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development in Saint Lucia 🇱🇨 (2016-21).
On Wednesday November 1st the Management Team (Dr. Carmona, Dr. Rigobert and Mr. Smith) at the University of St. Martin (USM) welcomed Mr. E. Jerome and Ms. L. Myers from Monroe College to the USM Campus. The two institutions have had a very meaningful partnership, which has allowed for the seamless transition of USM graduates to Monroe College, for completion of their Bachelors Degree. Among the issues discussed at yesterday's meeting were: 1. Strengthening the relationship between the two institutions to allow for student and faculty exchanges; 2. Expanding program offerings at the undergraduate level, and 3. Offering joint degree programs (joint certification). These will find full expression in a revised MOU between the two tertiary institutions. Monroe College University of St. Martin

So exciting to support a new cohort of Scholars in Service @ Stanford Impact Labs! I can't think of a faster way for faculty to learn how to make research more impactful than by spending time away from the University in the "real world." As one of our former Scholars in Service said: "In academia, we talk about policy as a few concrete choices to choose from ... what a policy really means is hundreds of thousands of decisions and actions, from formulation to implementation, each of which involves communicating with tons of people."
Everything we do at SIL is intended to put social science to use for society. Our commitment to making research actionable requires creating a culture within higher education that enables scholars and partners to conduct solutions-oriented work both within and beyond the university. How do we do that? Our Scholars in Service program, run jointly with the Haas Center for Public Service and co-managed by Luke Terra and Alex Carr, is one way. Scholars in Service invites Stanford University faculty to bring their expertise outside of the university and learn from the expertise of their partners in government agencies & nonprofit organizations while co-creating new policies and programs. This year, we're delighted to welcome Emma Brunskill in partnership with Carnegie Learning; William Koski in partnership with Center for Public Research and Leadership; Irene Loe in partnership with San Francisco Unified School District & Bay Area Women's Center; and Jochen Profit, MD, MPH in partnership with California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC) & Santa Clara Valley Medical Center to the program.

Great conversation today by two higher education leaders and a great facilitator. HFC President Kavalhuna joined University of Michigan Ann Arbor President Santa Ono and the Detroit Regional Chamber to discuss the new State of Education 2023 report. Some key takeaways from Russ' remarks: • Higher education needs to do a better job of helping people understand why and how it is critical to individual and state success • Higher education needs to focus on eliminating equity gaps and making access to education as universal as it can be • The future will be tightly tied to innovative partnerships between education, industry, and local government. https://lnkd.in/gT6JT9Mu

Distinguished Professor of Higher Ed Leadership, Founding Dir., HELOS and CHELIP, Provost Emerita at Bay Path University
In recent years, we've witnessed a trend that's reshaping the educational landscape, yet it's a story not often explored from a personal angle. We're talking about the closure of small colleges across our country - an event that's becoming all too common. These aren't just institutions ceasing operations; they're communities losing their heartbeat, students redirected from their paths, and legacies coming to an abrupt end. Our latest IngenioUs episode dives deep into this topic with someone who's lived through such an experience and emerged with stories, insights, and a book that's sparking conversations everywhere. Our guest is Jonathan Nichols, Bay Path University MFA graduate, college professor, and author of the best-selling book, "Requiem for a College." Jonathan's unique perspective as a faculty member affected by the closure of his alma mater, St. Joseph's College, combined with his familial ties to the institution, offers us an unparalleled look into the personal and community impact of such closures. His journey, from the initial shock and loss to the painstaking research into the why and how, reveals not just the challenges, but also the resilience and adaptability at the heart of the academic spirit. So, why do small colleges close? What happens to the communities, the students, the faculty, and the towns that host them? And importantly, what can we learn from these stories to help navigate, and maybe even prevent future closures? Join us as we explore these questions with Jon, unpacking the complexities of this issue and shedding light on the often-overlooked human side of higher education's changing landscape.
