In the US, approximately five million English learners attend schools nationwide. However, the 2022 NAEP report shows that only 10% read at or above a proficient level, compared to 37% of their peers. As a former school district administrator and 95 Percent Group's current Vice President of Professional Learning and Academics, Dr. Antonio Fierro, EdD, knows the challenges institutions face in adjusting their programs to the most recent research on what we know produces proficient readers. Find out what Fierro suggests as a two-pronged approach to ensuring ALL students are successful readers and next steps to support teachers working with English learners. https://95pg.info/3yhZRld #EquityInEducation

Congratulations to my friend and IAPC Fellow Chi-Ming Lam on this publication! "This article presents a study that examines the impact of a Philosophy for Children (P4C) program on teachers in Hong Kong, specifically focusing on its effectiveness in fostering dialogic and inquiry-based teaching approaches. While dialogic teaching has been acknowledged as beneficial for cultivating vital competencies such as creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills, existing literature reveals a prevalent tendency towards monologic teacher-student interactions across various subjects, grades, and countries. By providing training and support to teachers, enabling them to implement P4C in Integrated Humanities and English lessons, this study aimed to evaluate the program’s effectiveness in enhancing teachers’ classroom practices. The results indicated that P4C significantly contributed to improving teachers’ ability to engage in dialogic and inquiry-based teaching, thereby enhancing their overall effectiveness in the classroom. These findings highlight the significant role of P4C in promoting teachers’ professional development and its relevance to innovative teaching pedagogies in higher education." https://lnkd.in/gEqA7BMv College for Education and Engaged Learning at Montclair State University

I draw much inspiration for my work around integrated literacy from Australia. Many of their units are 1) interdisciplinary, 2) integrative of learning, literacy, and language (at all levels of meaning, from discourse down to phonemes), 3) pursue learning goals that have relevance outside the classroom. https://lnkd.in/gJ9E-BTK
