Scrolling through social media, Asim Waqif’s installation ‘Chaal’ caught my eye. Part of the Liminal Gaps exhibition at NMACC, the massive maze-like construction is made with bamboo, woven leaves, and ropes. It celebrates Indian craftsmanship and challenges classic ideas of sustainability. The work reminds us that while sustainability in art may seem like a modern buzzword, it's not exactly a new concept — it's been part of South Asian and indigenous artists and artisans' ethos for centuries. Traditional crafts have always valued their surroundings, protected their living environments, nature and practised mindful resource usage. However, it is exciting to see contemporary artists embrace sustainability in mindful ways by working with eco-friendly materials, reducing waste, and promoting ethical production. How can we make the arts more sustainable as businesses? The artists are already doing their bit. 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐌𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐢 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐢𝐫 Imagine a world where pollution is not just a problem, but a resource. A Mumbai-based startup, CarbonCraft, is making this possible by creating carbon tiles out of polluted air. This innovative approach not only addresses the pressing issue of air pollution but also contributes to sustainable construction. Each carbon tile produced by Carbon Craft Design is equivalent to cleaning 30,000 litres of polluted air. This means that every tile contributes to providing one full day's worth of clean air per person. The tiles are handmade by traditional craftsmen, making them not only eco-friendly but also a testament to the rich Indian craft tradition. The startup's journey began when its founder, Tejas Sidnal, was inspired by a video from Air-Ink, a Boston-based startup that processes air pollutants into soot used to make black ink.This sparked a passion in Tejas to use biomimicry and architectural design to create a building component out of air pollution. The result is the carbon tile, a product that consumes only one-fifth of the energy required to manufacture vitrified tiles. The carbon tiles are infused with materials like marble chips, marble powder, cement, and a proprietary binder. Currently, they can only be used for interior construction, but research is underway to develop tiles suitable for exterior construction. The potential of this innovation is enormous, as it could significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the construction industry. The story of Carbon Craft Design is a shining example of how innovation can turn challenges into opportunities. It's a testament to the power of creativity, sustainability, and the human spirit. 🏛️ I recently visited one of the largest and most well-known exhibitions in the world: Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia. My favorite #LaBiennale exhibitions were ‘Zero Gravity Urbanism – Principles for a New Livability’ and ‘The Museum of Symbiosis’ – both provide fascinating commentary on human behavior change.   While these exhibits may be different in the nature of their messages, one undeniable thing remains: observing works such as these inspires us to expand our mind and imagine what the unimaginable could look like; that opportunities are limitless when innovation is fueled.     It was interesting to see two approaches to behavior change – one that looks into the future and the other into the past – to understand human interaction:   🏙️Zero Gravity Urbanism presents #NEOM’s radical approach to urban planning, displaying city structures crafted to optimize social interaction, promote sustainability, and create an efficient, localized community. These architectural models, especially the well-known community ‘The Line’, emphasize a balance between nature and human progress, focusing on how proximity and our environment can affect behavior changes.   🌿The Museum of Symbiosis tells a science-fiction story through an immersive audio experience about a society that has adopted biotechnology and adapted to live in unison with the natural environment. The exhibit showcases the roots of transformative behavior change through its display of donated world artifacts.   💭An interesting question came to mind during my visit: How will our future environment impact human behavior?   My trip to the Biennale taught me lessons that I will bring back to Philip Morris International, and it reminded me the power of human imagination and what could limitless possibilities look like. 🏛️ Visited the Bauhaus Museum: A Journey into Design and Innovation 🌈 I recently had the privilege of exploring the remarkable world of design at the Bauhaus Museum, and the experience left me truly inspired. Here are the key takeaways from this enriching visit: 1️⃣ Embracing interdisciplinary collaboration: The Bauhaus movement exemplified the power of collaboration between artists, architects, and craftsmen. Their seamless integration of various disciplines led to groundbreaking innovations and iconic designs. It reminds us of the value of collaboration in our own work, fostering creativity and pushing boundaries. 2️⃣ Celebrating simplicity and functionality: Bauhaus principles emphasize simplicity and functionality in design. From sleek furniture to minimalist architecture, the focus on form follows function teaches us to prioritize purpose and elegance in our creations. Applying this mindset to our professional endeavors can lead to streamlined and impactful outcomes. 3️⃣ Exploring the fusion of art and technology: The Bauhaus masters embraced emerging technologies of their time, blending traditional craftsmanship with industrial techniques. This fusion unlocked new possibilities and opened doors to uncharted artistic territories. Today, it encourages us to leverage technology to enhance our own creative processes and reimagine the boundaries of art and innovation. 4️⃣ Cultivating a culture of experimentation: Bauhaus artists challenged conventions and explored unconventional materials and techniques fearlessly. Their spirit of experimentation invites us to embrace risk, learn from failures, and continually push the boundaries of our own creativity. It's a reminder that innovation thrives when we venture beyond our comfort zones. Visiting the Bauhaus Museum was a profound reminder of the impact that design and innovation can have on our lives. It ignited a passion within me to approach my own work with renewed vigor, embracing collaboration, simplicity, experimentation, and the fusion of art and technology. Full disclosure here - I had nothing to do with the amazing projects that won awards at Australia's International Good Design Awards 2023. A big congratulations to the teams at McGregor Coxall and their partners who did! What I will be doing, is working hard with McGregor Coxall's Biolab to put Adrian McGregor's winning book 'Biourbanism Cities as Nature' into action. The Biolab are an interdisciplinary team of researchers and specialists using geospatial and computational design techniques to understand the multiple systems that make up cities and regional areas. We analyse the interdependency of these systems and the impacts of hazards (such as bushfires, floods, heat) to create simple-to-use, evidence-based decision-making tools and scenario modelling to predict impact. Sound complicated? Here are a few examples of what we've been doing this year: 🏵 using topographical, geological, soil and other data to improve the probability of vegetation restoration in desert areas (you can now click on a map of a massive region, and it will give you information on the probability of survival of specific plants to improve restoration of plant communities) 🌳 using scenario modelling to test the impact of different layouts of trees on urban heat (should they be clustered, in lines, how tall should they be, etc etc) 🏭 using digital twins to assess the competing impacts of development on flood modelling, change in bushfire risk, urban heat, job creation and other liveability factors From the micro to the macro scale of cities and regions, we are continually improving our methodologies to create positive impact on cities and regions facing multiple hazards. Key areas of focus in the next year include how we can better incorporate human-generated data (such as from community participation), the application of our techniques in post-disaster scenarios, and ensuring we capture place-specific data to build on the strengths and identity of the places we are working in. The traditional Korean housing vernacular known as 'hanok' began to disappear in the late 1900s, leaving only small clusters in today's larger South Korean cities. Reflecting on this cultural legacy, Teo Yang explores innovative responses to the evolving cityscape by creating objects that reinterpret architectural remnants, aiming to preserve their significance while adapting them for contemporary use and contributing to the ongoing narrative of urban transformation. Yang utilises a mix of modern materials such as glass, rubber, marble, and veneer to transform architectural remnants into new forms with symbolic continuity to their heritage. The relationship between #art and #design has always sparked passionate discussions, highlighting both their similarities and differences. On one hand, both fields share a deep attention to beauty and aesthetics and are strongly influenced by creativity. However, while art can exist without a practical function, functionality is the primary goal of design. This dualism is well illustrated in the "La Casa Dentro" exhibition by #Formafantasma at the Fondazione ICA, where director Alberto Salvadori reflects on these disciplines. Art and design, though distinct, share a close relationship based on #aesthetics and #creativity.
