Career Doggedness At the age of 24, having worked for almost 3 years and kick-started a career in business development within the oil and gas industry, I made a switch to Human Resources. The motivation behind it varied, but at the core was my transition to the Czech Republic. As an intern, I worked with the administrative functions of Learning and Development within the same Business Development scope. I believe this was the point I fell in love with human capacity development and growth, marking the beginning of my secret love and desire for a career in Human Resources. Moving to the Czech Republic with a plethora of opportunities, I decided to take the plunge. With much-needed self-development, independent career research tools, training, and counseling, I secured my first job in Human Resources with a consulting company. This transition meant a lot to me, especially proving that doggedness could pay off, a concept I had greatly doubted and questioned. I was educated within a system that suggested career transitions were nearly impossible if not experientially prepared for them. This implied staying with the familiar, contributing to what I call "career burnout" and reduced productivity in the corporate world. I share this to emphasize that, despite enjoying business development, exploring other career opportunities aligned with my values and dreams was crucial. Having thoroughly enjoyed the last few years in this role, I look forward to more opportunities. I challenge you to dare to dream, make that tenacious career transition. Yesterday we talked about the fastest growing and fastest declining industries in Oregon. If your industry was in the declining category, you probably got a little worried. So today we offer how to identify your #TransferrableSkills to a new industry and occupation. 1. Identify the industry and occupation that you are interested in. Learn what you can about that industry through online research. Identify a few of the top companies in that industry and visit their #LinkedIn company page to learn more. 2. Once you've identified the industry you are interested in, research the occupations available within that industry. Look up individual occupations on onetonline.org where you can explore the tasks, technology and skills needed for that type of work. 3. After honing in on your targeted occupation, go through the skills and work activities lists and highlight the hard and soft skills you already possess. 4. Research opportunities to gain the skills you will also need for the occupation you are interested in. 5. Talk with #WorkSourceOregon to see if there are resources that can assist you with obtaining the necessary skills, certifications and/or trainings needed in your pursuit of the new occupation. You may find that you already have many of the skills needed to transition into a new occupation. This information can help to build your targeted resume for the new industry and occupation that you choose to pursue. BONUS TIP: Further customize and target your resume using the same method above with each individual job description you apply to.
