🌐 As someone deeply invested in humanitarian work, I've often grappled with the complexities and unintended consequences of international volunteering. On #InternationalVolunteersDay, I take an introspective look at the 'White Savior Complex' and its implications in global aid. It's crucial that we, as volunteers and aid workers, continuously examine our motives, actions, and the impact we have on the communities we intend to serve. This piece isn't just an exploration—it's a call to shift our mindset from 'saving' to 'supporting,' from speaking for to listening to the communities we engage with. 🔗 Dive into the conversation and join me in redefining responsible volunteering: https://lnkd.in/dzNpZ-fk

Did you know that last week was National Volunteer Week? Neither did I! But now that I do, I want to give an anonymous shout out to all of the amazing volunteers and charitable organisations that I have had the pleasure to work with over the past-many years. Your mahi matters to me. And while I'm here - a few insights I can share from some of this work: 1 - Volunteers don't do it for the recognition. But, they do want to feel appreciated 2 - There is no single way to show appreciation for your volunteers in a way that will universally "land well". Sadly, misjudged expressions of appreciation sometimes do more harm than good 3 - The best way to get it right, is to understand your volunteers deeply, and have a well-stocked toolkit that your volunteer-managers can dig into to show authentic and well-considered appreciation on a case-by-case basis PM me if you want to know more about the research to support these insights, or how you can check whether the frameworks and approaches you have in place will land well with your volunteers. #NVW2024 #TheBigShoutOut

Following the success of its Global Summit in Bogotá last December, the #ShiftThePower campaign is now continuing on the “road after Bogotá”, with a series of events and initiatives that shine a light on how the current international development funding system can be reshaped in favour of #GlobalSouth actors and with #equity at its core. This week, on the 18th of April, organisations and individuals affiliated with the #ShiftThePower movement came together to explore alternative models of measuring and evaluating the success of locally-led initiatives. Too often, existing donor-driven approaches have vied for rigid and top-down ways of measuring success, at the expense of civil societies’ actual needs. Countering this tendency, the #ShiftThePower webinar explored pioneering models of M&E based on shared frameworks between donors and communities, drawing on existing examples from Brazil, Kenya, and Indonesia. 🔗Head to the The Global Fund for Community Foundations website for more resources on measurement and shifting power: https://lnkd.in/dR3tZJns #InternationalDevelopment #Aid #Equity

Thanks to the thousands of volunteers that make stuff happen! Today is international volunteer day #ivd2023 and a great chance to reflect on how this critical workforce, which is often unseen, contributes to making many of our systems operate. Without volunteers, many of our health and social services would grind to a halt. Consider this: 💪 Approximately 21.5% of New Zealanders undertake volunteer work. 💲 The value of formal volunteering is estimated at $4 billion per annum. 👏 New Zealanders contribute a total of around 159 million hours of formal volunteer labour each year. 👥 11.8% of people undertake informal volunteering work, contributing a total of 7.8 million hours of volunteer labour per year to these figures. Source: https://lnkd.in/gNn-D_sH To my former colleagues at Volunteering New Zealand | Tūao Aotearoa and Be Collective - happy international volunteer day! 🎉🌏☺️
