Proud to announce my next step.
Sort of.
I am now officially a Little League manager. Saturday, we had tryouts. Last night, roster selection. Tomorrow, the first practice of the Fall season.
Until now, I have never been the manager (head coach). I was an assistant in the Spring, and before that just a proud dad watching from the stands.
But, this time around, everything changes. I'll be managing my youngest son, some of his buddies and former teammates, and some kids I won't truly meet until tomorrow. There's some known in all of that, but more unknown. And that's exciting.
You see, as we selected rosters last night, my assistant coach and I kept going back to one thing over everything else. "How will this kid fit in with the team?" Not necessarily what position the kid could play. Or how strong their arm was. Or if they could send the ball to the moon. Instead, we focused on teamwork first. How will these kids fit together? How can they become a team?
Skills are needed for every job. Expertise too. You want rock stars. Or I suppose a better term in this case would be "all-stars." But too many times, fit is forgotten. An employee may be the best salesperson you've ever seen in action, but they also may be a cancer to the culture. One may be the foremost expert you've ever found on a particular subject, but they may also tear people apart.
The importance of fit can't be understated. We're not building one hall of famer. We're building an entire team.
Also, Brody Jackson, wherever you are, you stole my dream job.
