Downsizing doesn’t work. Real growth comes from innovation, not contraction ☝️ 🚫💼 Research shows that layoffs fail to improve financial performance and often lead to a decline in productivity and a toxic work environment. 📩 In tomorrow’s newsletter, we’ll share Pim’s new blog post, where he dives into the meta-analysis and explains better alternatives to downsizing. There is a time and a place for a well considered and planned streamlining strategy to be implemented to downsize in any organisation, even those carrying an over abundance of highly skilled and experienced workforce. It's extremely short sighted and can easily be longer term severely detrimental to an organisation to excessively reduce head count solely to make an instant impact on the bottom line without an extremely considered and developed future business and people strategy. I like how someone else has phrased it where often these decisions are made by accountants at the highest levels of senior leadership who 'know the cost of everything and the value of nothing'.

Very true and I feel prevelent. The simplest way to look at things would be to cut jobs and therefore costs, these decisions are often made higher up the chain by leaders who do not fully understand the sector they work in. This is at the detriment of a service, the team that’s left and therefore the success of the business. Looking at productivity, improving footfall, training, and support should be done first. A company should be able and willing to adapt continuously, teams need to be able to cope with these changes and managers given the tools to deal with performance issues. Sometimes downsizing and restructure must happen but sometimes it’s not the right answer.

I love going down the rabbit hole.

Maybe. But downsizing could help companies realise that they could deliver more value with less people. Automations? AI? Fat organisations are hindering innovation. Redundant roles, slower decision making, more coordination.

Downsizing to save money, is like cutting a leg off to save weight.       The immediate effect achieves your short- term goals, but the long-term result, as many companies and industries* have discovered, is disastrous *Chemicals. Electronics, Aircraft, White goods, Transport, Shipbuilding. Steel, etc, etc. Has someone has blundered?

Delivered with terms like restructure or transformation, downsizing demonstrates a lack of appreciation that it’s the people who build and sustain a business. A short term fix with a long term systemic flaw.

I've always believed in the old cliche ' in right roles, right people doing right things right.' and 'no such thing as bad teams just bad leaders' downsizing is fine, companies like organisms contract and expand. I always start at the leadership level, usual companies with hierarchies it means starting there because if the company is hurting they most probably took the decisions that put it there. Lead by example!!
