I love being a proactive recruiter and finding amazing talent and I hope my network will find some talent from these companies going through these layoffs. 💊 CVS (Nationwide) - 5,000 non-customer facing positions cut. ⚕ Optum Health (Virtual) - Closing virtual care business operations. Undisclosed number of employees impacted. 🏥 Hinge Health (Physical Therapy) - Laid off about 10% of staff. 🏥 UPMC (Pittsburgh, PA) - Laid off about 1,000 staff members (non-clinical). ⚕ Medline (Lincolnton, NC / Charlotte area) 200 people laid off at medical distribution center. 🧬 Emergent BioSolutions - 300 employees laid off and also closing 85 vacant positions (2 facility closures in Baltimore, Maryland and Rockville, Maryland). 🏥 Stanislaus Surgical Hospital of Modesto (Modesto, California) - Facing closure after removal from Medicare Program. Hospital employees from administrative assistants to registered nurses and X-ray technicians would be laid off between April 29 and May 1, according to the April 15 letter to the county. 🏥 Walmart Health - Closing down entire Walmart Health division at all 51 locations (Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Illinois, Texas) There is some incredible talent that has been impacted and they are looking for a new opportunity. Minnesota 🏥 North Memorial Health Laying off 103 workers, cutting outpatient mental health in Robbinsdale Florida & Connecticut 🏥 Walgreens Cutting nearly 650 jobs in Dayville, Connecticut, and Orlando, Florida. Here's why I love LinkedIn and continue to make it a part of my daily morning routine. Michael R. O'Brien, MD brings value in what he posts every day. In the post shared he talks about layoffs in healthcare specifically tech-focused layoffs. I engaged with him in the comments about how I see this impacting new models of care re: value-based kidney care and we had an intellectually stimulating exchange. In every job situation I've been in, I've struggled to find peers who can banter with me on world views in healthcare - driving strategy and improving the way we practice. A lot of approaches feel archaic and lacking agility. This quick back and forth gave me new insight on a problem I've been writing about in my own LinkedIn posts - challenges faced in trying to integrate fragmented healthcare in risk-based models of care. Michael used the phrase "de-risking" in describing core strategies that could impact success in VBC models of care. This opened up a part of my brain I wasn't anticipating at 8:20AM this morning while shuffling through my morning routine. Key takeaways I'm describing as --> Three Pillars of De-risking Populations in Value-Based Healthcare: 1. Real-Time Admission, Discharge, and Transfer (ADT) Feeds: Enables quick, informed decision-making; Supports effective transitions of care; Reduces financial risks through lower readmissions. 2.Assessing Patient Engagement Through Ongoing Data Mining: Utilizes proxy measures reflecting engaged activities; Requires a crosswalk between interventions and desired outcomes; Engagement is confirmed when intervention and outcome measures correlate ("Yes, Engaged"). 3. Empowering Interdisciplinary Teams Through Data Literacy: Fosters evidence-based decision-making; Improves workflow efficiency; Incorporates real-time metrics for actionable insights. These three things are critical and perhaps the most important data-based business intelligence a VBC org can develop. More to come as I unpack additional thoughts this week. Attention Revenue Cycle friends: Today, I received devastating news that my dear friend's entire team of nurse billers and auditors was eliminated. The 3 that I know well have nearly 90 years combined of clinical nursing and revenue cycle expertise. If you are looking for remote support part time or full time, or for onsite, are local to the greater Cleveland/Akron area, please reach out. Any layoff is devastating, but after over 25 years of experience in an organization to suddenly have access cut off and a call to IT Support who drop the hint to "call HR" before a proper call to layoff is made?! OOPH! My heart is broken for them. Layoffs are common, I get it, but we have to do better. HR tells managing folks to "take the emotion out of it-stick to the script" and to "reiterate these are business decisions", but at the end of the day, I call BS. These are still PEOPLE decisions and should have people oriented communications and empathy. "Business" doesn't have to mean cold and lacking empathy. No one is going to report to HR a kind manager who said "thank you for all you've done" or "I'm sorry to lose you". We all know that there is no perfect way to do this, but people's lives and their families lives are affected the minute this happens and we need to remember the gravity of these situations no matter which side of the bad news we are on.
