July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. It is a time to bring awareness to the unique challenges that racial and ethnic minorities in the United States face when it comes to mental illness. In 2020, fewer than one in every two African American adults got care for mental health. In 2018, Asian Americans were 60 percent less likely to receive mental health treatment than non-Hispanic Whites. Obstacles for many include a lack of health insurance, less access to treatment, and stigma. Having worked with insurance for a period of time, it is evident that insurance companies do not value the impact of mental healthcare the same way they acknowledge medical healthcare. Many therapists are then put in a position to decide whether to get paid less than what is respectable for the investment they put into further education and training or to make mental healthcare even more inaccessible. I see more professional in this field discussing this and a dire need for change, so I can only hope that we see a big change soon. APA is alarmed by poor in-network access to mental health resources. In 2008, Congress enacted the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requiring insurance coverage for psychological conditions to be no more restrictive than insurance coverage for other medical conditions. Research shows barriers to mental healthcare amongst the African American community include: stigma, lack of knowledge, lack of affordability, lack of trust, impersonal service from treatment providers and lack of cultural understanding. Representation in mental healthcare is so important for these reasons. When searching for a mental health provider its important to: 💎Book a consultation. 💎Understand payment options + resources available to you. 💎 Understand your insurance benefits package. 💎 Verify the mental health provider’s license (as a Coach and a Licensed Clinician have very different offerings). 💎 Verify if the mental health provider is licensed to practice in the state you currently reside. Every July, we observe National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month (NMMHM) to highlight the unique challenges racial and ethnic minorities face in accessing mental health care. These barriers include a lack of health insurance, stigma, and limited access to treatment, all of which contribute to significant health inequities. At Coppel Consulting, we recognize that these disparities also extend to access to life-saving organ transplants. Marginalized groups, including women and BIPOC, face many obstacles when trying to access mental health care, such as a lack of health insurance and stigma. By starting conversations to discuss these issues and allow people to speak about their experiences, we can create more accepting and welcoming spaces. We need to break the silence around trauma in minority communities. Mental health struggles affect people of all races and genders, but minority women face unique challenges.
