It's less than two weeks until the NJAMHAA Fall Conference, and we're excited to share some more details about one of the workshops that Anne will be hosting. On October 24th, we will be sharing five steps to improving retention at mental health and addiction agencies. Much of the country suffers from staff retention challenges, and mental health and addiction agencies are no different. The challenge is that clinicians, trained to be supportive and develop team members, struggle to hold the line on accountability and driving results. The same is true of many not-for-profits. The challenge for retention is that people leave when they are frustrated by indecision, inaction, unrealistic goals, and lack of accountability. These challenges have their roots in a failure to objectively confront what isn’t working and why. Does this sound familiar? I believe as educators, we have the opportunity to influence future generations' attitudes and perceptions toward individuals with drug use disorders. By integrating lessons on empathy, mental health, and addiction into our curriculum, we can help students develop a deeper understanding of the complex factors that contribute to substance use disorders. We can teach them to view addiction as a health issue rather than a moral failing, emphasizing the importance of support, treatment, and rehabilitation. By doing so, we can equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to challenge stigma, provide support, and contribute to a more compassionate and inclusive society.
