Well that was a week! It started at 5.40am on Monday when I left for Doncaster for a strategy day in my Non-Exec role at The Build Chain, followed by chairing the board of trustees at Home-Start Kettering. I've delivered pitches, demos, projects and held investment calls. To top it all off was the Builders Merchants Federation Ltd annual conference. Whilst I was only able to attend for a day, what a day it was! Amazing speakers, including an incredible keynote from Claire Lomas MBE, awesome workshops and just the right mix of #networking with old industry friends and new. What I also loved seeing throughout the presentation was #procurement mentioned both directly, and indirectly, as a significant opportunity for business growth and development. 3 of the 6 "building value" BMF initiatives are "building efficiency", "building sustainability" and "building health & safety" - and procurement has a huge role to play in all 3 when it comes to supply chain, range and supplier management. Then Tom Diplock from LEK highlighted the growth, margin improvement and cash generation potential within the Builders Merchant market. With Pricing, Range and Procurement all called out at key areas. He also talked about contractors increasingly recognising building products as a strategic priority for sustainability - which means innovation in range and availability and a need for greater collaboration, something I talk about alot! Despite the mixed market conditions, there are so many amazing opportunities out there. Stay curious and go and get them! The BMF Sector Awareness Programme Working Group – 'Making a Material Difference' together. We’ve been working hard, getting ready for the the soft launch of the programme to BMF members at JCB Rocester, on 30th April. For the last 18 months now, I've had the great privilege of working with this exceptional group of people! Together with the BMF team, Jeremy Harris, Anu Singh, we’ve been shaping the strategy that will put Building Materials on the map, for the first time. It's been quite a journey: researching the barriers we need to overcome to attract top talent and new entrants into the sector. Defining what makes our sector unique and articulating those powerful USPs that have never been promoted in a coordinated way before. Developing the brand, creative and communications strategy that will make our 'invisible' sector visible and create clear pathways into it. And understanding the needs of the BMF's wide range of members, from merchants to manufacturers and service providers, creating a programme that strengthens the sector for all. I’ve worked for 5 years on the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Local Enterprise Partnership and I’ve been heavily involved in a number of funding bids. I’ve felt sick to the stomach, more than once, when good bids are rejected by Whitehall. Point 1: we should not be bidding in the first place. Provision of buses is a necessity for all citizens of all places, not some select places. Point 2: I’ve been aligned all through my time at the LEP with local elected politicians because they are trying their best to get resources into SY. Point 3: I agree with Oliver Coppard on almost all of the latest statements in this link. It is a terrible situation. What I want to see though is talking up buses. It is the national system that is broken, not our local bus service. Being told that something is broken suggests something is bad. It isn’t bad - there just isn’t enough of it and there is not the money there to get more buses where we need them to go around both SY and the clock. Calling something broken 1) means any attempts to grow patronage are doomed to failure 2) fails to praise the army of drivers, control staff, engineers and managers, who turn out and drive a fleet day after day. It is time to talk up buses in SY whilst our elected politicians and business representatives continue to try to get central government to listen and to fund our bus service. The problem here is central government funding. The bus service we have is a consequence of that. It is not broken. I use it most days and it generally clean, friendly and safe. It has its moments but equally, so do many car journeys. Road works. Congestion. Let’s banish “broken” to Room 101. Let’s substitute “needs much more funding.” Let’s talk up buses. We must, to achieve our economic plans. Yes the operating model may change, but they are still the same buses. Like on the railways, taking a private operator away is not a silver bullet. Funding, pure and simple, is the immediate issue before we get to route network.

Just profit for performance and delivering outcomes. ❌ Supply chain engaged too late to influence the project’s success ✅ V(very) ECI with partners supporting projects at strategic definition stage, years before a spade in the ground ❌ Lack of investment in the region and limited socio-economic benefit ✅ Real money being invested by businesses to develop facilities, invest in future talent and improve communities ❌ Contractors protecting their own margin and commercial behaviours stifling delivery ✅ Partners with aligned outcomes and commercial drivers to achieve success factors ❌ Dozens of different contracts in the supply chain and inappropriate risk transfer ✅ A centrally drafted NEC4 suite for all tiers of the supply chain with consistent terms and fair risk transfer ❌ What if it doesn’t work? ✅ What if it does? ❗️It takes time, it needs a huge shift in culture and it’ll always be challenging, but investment and commitment to creating the right delivery models can transform outcomes for our projects, communities and supply chains.

Well, that has been a long time coming but after many years (6 since submission) the Welwyn Hatfield Local Plan has been adopted by Full Council yesterday evening. It has been quite a process but some welcome certainty in moving forward for a number of strategic sites. Work to do. Not long until the required immediate review kicks in. The contract for CalMac to run ferries on Scotland's west coast has been extended by a year. It comes as ministers are considering a direct award to the Scottish government-owned operator without a competitive tendering process. A direct award is Transport Scotland's preferred option, rather than accepting bids from rival firms. The contract had been due to expire on 30 September, but it said an extra year would allow further "due diligence" work to take place. The move comes after a long period of problems on the CalMac network. The firm has struggled to maintain services with an ageing and increasingly unreliable fleet which it leases from another government-owned agency CMAL. There have been delays to repairs to the main Arran ferry, cancellation of services to South Uist and islanders on Mull have also faced frequent disruption.
