Many of us at Capital Rivers Commercial have been through a large merger and acquisition with Mattress Firm and Sleep Train. It’s a tough a decision to condense two successful brands into one but it’s a must for long term success. “It’s probably easier to focus on one brand for efficiencies and brand/consumer awareness across the country.” The cost savings for Advertising and Branding are obvious but aligning your team and growing employee ownership by getting everyone behind one new company is a must. After 25 years of building brands and business, I am so pleased to share this incredibly special news. I met Alyssa Kerbel nearly a decade and a half ago, when my oldest son was just a newborn. She had just opened up her shop on Queen Street, and I came in with him - I was told I was one of the first customers and they called me shortly thereafter to ask if my son would model in a shoot. What parent wouldn’t be thrilled with this cuteness? But I didn’t love the brand simply for its gorgeous neutral tones, cozy-cool storefront, and minimalist, genderless aesthetic. The mission of Mini Mioche was what hit me in the heart - the commitment to sustainable design, ethical manufacturing, doing good in the world. In the late aughts, there weren’t a lot of brands leading with these values - I’d go so far as to say many of those that do still today aren’t walking the walk. Business as a force for good has always been something that has driven me forward as an entrepreneur, and I have always had tremendous admiration for those who truly live that mission. Over the years, Alyssa and I became trusted colleagues - it was often hard to find other entrepreneurs with whom to share this journey - and friends. We were in a mastermind group together for five years, sharing stories and concerns and advice. When I started JC+CO growth accelerants inc., mini mioche was among the first clients I had. But more than any of this? My kids grew up in mini mioche. I gifted the brand more times than I could count. The littles were eternally cozy-cute, and I loved supporting a brand that I deeply believed in. So when Alyssa reached out late last year to share that she was considering what her next steps might look like, I knew exactly what we were going to figure out. I’m not much for manifestation, but I will tell you that, without question, the last 25 years have delivered me to this place with intention. The first thing I did when I got the call that the acquisition was closed? I turned on carbon offset shipping for our ecommerce store with Shopify Planet. The next week? I initiated the process for Carbon Neutral Certification. Last week, we got the notification that our application for membership to 1% for the Planet had been confirmed. We launched a new site. We took a bajillion videos and photos. But most importantly, we took the first steps to bringing this brand, that I’ve spent the last decade and a half shopping, sharing, and admiring, into its next 15 years. Continuing forth with the deep, powerful integrity that brought it to life, and taking these values to the future. Thank you, Alyssa, for sharing this beautiful, beautiful baby with me. 15 years, an earworm of an ad, and successful branding at its best - that is the legacy of Havells that I remember and one that has helped seep into the Indian household that couldn't be bothered about which MCB is installed in their home until the "shock laga" ad came along 💡 The "Bijli Baba" of India went from being a mere electricals store in Delhi to an Rs. 80,000+ crore market cap company in 65 years - but it was tired of being just a brand that was hidden behind walls. Havells did one thing that went well and one thing that didn't go so well in the past decade - but how did this "switch" in strategy affect the company? 1. From Electricals To Electronics 👍 Not only did this move essentially double its addressable market to about Rs. 2.5 lakh crore (by adding fans, heaters, and refrigerators to their product mix), but Havells' market leadership in the switchgears and cable segment gave the company the brand recognition it needed to penetrate the electronics market. Cut to a decade later and its electronics business is now 2x of what it was later, with revenue and profitability being stellar examples of the success that was this switch to electronics! Doesn't hurt that the stock went up by 10x in the process! 2. Lloyd Acquisition 👎 While it had faith in its products, there seemed to be something missing. Hence in 2017, Havells acquired Lloyd, the air-conditioning giant of the country. This should've been the "khushiyon ki guarantee" that Havells needed, but instead became a drag, with dropping margins, slow revenue growth and over Rs. 200 crore in losses in just FY23 in this segment - led by various factors like changing GST norms, players like Blue Star and Voltas taking over, and a massive dumping spree in the television market. This isn't the first time that an acquisition by Havells hadn't gone according to plan, with the Sylvania acquisition (a European electricals company almost twice the size of Havells) that happened at an unlucky time - the global financial crisis. Yet, Havells turned that around, exited the investment in 2016 and used the proceeds to acquire Lloyd, and the hope remains that Havells can turn this around too. Regardless - a growing addressable market, a solid brand, and a history of accomplishing what it sets its mind to - Havells' ability to withstand "shocks" can justify the premium valuations it gets!
