Salespeople have always been expected to stay late, work early, work weekends - anything to close a deal. But is this changing? I have seen such a drastic shift in the way candidates approach and attitude towards work since Covid. So many more people now have the 'life's too short to spend every hour of your day at your desk' mentality. Which I'm completely onboard with. Pay peanuts get monkeys. Had a job briefing yesterday. A nice present for my first day back! So I take the brief: Senior Account Exec ✅ 10+ years of Enterprise experience ✅ Tier 1 Retail experience✅ Sold to C-Level ✅ Track record of overachievement ✅ My eyes lit up. I've filled it already. Then I heard the salary... Come on people. I don't care what market it is. If you are not prepared to hire less experienced sales reps. You must pay people what they are worth. Or when the job market improves (as it inevitably will) - you will get left behind. The $ you save now will cost you a hell of a lot more in the long run. PS - Unsure what to pay sales pros? I just saw this on a job posting: "As Territory Sales Manager, you are responsible for meeting and completely obliterating your quota." My question is: Who is obliterating their quota in 2024? Current research indicates that around 70% of B2B sales teams in 2024-2025 are not expected to achieve their annual sales quotas. Job postings with such unrealistic expectations show how out of touch some organizations are with reality. And it gets better. The posting title states "Remote" but the details say "requires in-office attendance". What gives? We can do better.
