We are SO excited to share this new partnered effort from Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) and Appalachian Conservation Corps (ACC)! ⛰️ Launched in 2022, the West Virginia Rural Engagement Ambassadors for Development and Youth (WV READY) program is back for its 2023-2024 project year! WV READY pairs AmeriCorps members with agencies to boost West Virginia’s outdoor recreation economy. This 32-week program is dedicated to supporting outdoor economic projects, seasonal programs, youth development, asset mapping, and marketing local opportunities. WV READY members work diligently in communities across the state, strengthening and growing regional outdoor initiatives. Plus, with ACC conservation crew efforts, we're creating even more opportunities for West Virginian youth. Let's embrace the great outdoors together! 🏞️ Conservation Legacy loves our role as a leading provider across the nation. In the past 25 years, we have built and maintained thousands of miles of trails that are widely loved and used by local residents and visitors alike. We need your support to continue this work. Help Conservation Legacy build and maintain more accessible trails with a donation today! ➡️ https://tr.ee/gNTewqOcRT

In March 2021, I began an effort that would greatly impact the course of my life, the creation of the NYC Plover Project — a first-of-its-kind non-profit organization with the unwavering purpose of increasing nesting success for the endangered Piping Plover - the only federally-listed species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 that nests in NYC. I will cut to the chase - the situation for this fragile beach-nesting bird in NYC is dire, and I am asking for your help. For this work, and the impact we have had in less than three years, we have built great partnerships with National Park Service and NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, and have been awarded several honors including National Park Service’s Hartzog Volunteer Group of the Year (for the entire nation) and the Keesee Conservation Award from National Audubon Society — New York & Connecticut. But why should you or we care about a tiny shorebird? I would argue that if you want to see the impact of climate change TODAY in our nation’s most populous city, come to the beach and meet the Piping Plover. I strongly believe that a city and society that protects the most vulnerable is a better and kinder one overall. As most of us care deeply about the climate crisis, I suggest that we need to center species protection and biodiversity efforts within this work. We are looking to expand from our volunteer programs on every single beach in NYC where Plovers nest (hard work we will continue to grow), but also to bring our work in NYC public school classrooms, bring classrooms to the beach, and expand our community engagement work. Humans are the leading cause for Piping Plover nest and chick loss, so we must do anything and everything within our power to reach people. It may not happen overnight, but we are already seeing impact throughout the tens of thousands of people we have reached through our 10,000 + hours of volunteer service with more than 250 volunteers since 2021. This holiday season, we have also set an audacious goal of $30,000 for individual giving. Please consider a donation here: https://lnkd.in/ebSHxedZ

As the official charitable arm of the Bureau of Land Management, the Foundation for America’s Public Lands convened partners from across the country to help us reimagine outdoor recreation on America’s public lands and waters. Our new report released today includes responsive actions the BLM can consider that would foster greater partner engagement, build an inclusive culture, and help address the challenges they face to ensure public lands and waters are available, accessible, and able to be enjoyed by current and future generations alike. One thing is clear – we need strong partnerships to ensure the BLM has the resources it needs to implement the vision. This report is just the beginning, and we look forward to ongoing, future partnerships to make the vision a reality. Read our report: https://lnkd.in/ewTSnN2C

The feedback from my fall experiment of offering free habitat workshops was so positive I’ve decided to host seasonal habitat workshops this year to share actionable ways to create a more ecologically sustainably landscape - with the focus on the function of our yards as a wildlife habitat. The size of the workshops is intentionally limited to make them more interactive and encourage authentic connections. I’ve worked hard to offer hands-on and practical ideas geared towards anyone who is at the beginning of the process of restoring habitat where they live. I’m maintaining the low-key nature of the workshops by reaching out through my networks to folks who are open to making their yards more wildlife friendly. Feel free to share this information with anyone who you think "gets it" and might benefit. The Winter Habitat Yard Workshop is on Sunday, February 25 from 12:00-2:00pm. Before reserving a spot by e-mailing ljmarkson@att.net, please read the blog post here (https://lnkd.in/dbps6NzX) plus the one I wrote last fall (https://lnkd.in/g3H9z_ij) detailing the reasons for the workshop and what to expect. Spring and summer dates are in the works! The workshops are for adults, but children of all ages are welcome – after all it’s their future we’re all trying to save! Be on the lookout for a special family workshop this summer. * I'm keeping the workshops free. My website is being updated and will have a donate button now that Nurture Native Nature is a non-profit organization. This will help offset the cost of offering free educational community outreach programs and activities throughout the year. #nativeplants #naturelovers #habitatyard #coexistwithnature #nurturenativenature

Restorative Justice: The Buffalo’s Return on Native Nonprofit Day, May 17, 2024 For many Native American tribes, the buffalo, or bison, is a sacred animal, integral to our way of life, survival and holds spiritual significance. The near-extermination of buffalo in the 19th century was a deliberate act of oppression, aimed at dismantling Indigenous economies, cultures, and self-sufficiency. We believe the buffalo was a gift from the Great Spirit to sustain us, and its suffering paralleled our own pain and oppression. The reintroduction of buffalo represents a reclamation of heritage, sovereignty, and resilience. It signifies the restoration of a vital resource that once sustained Indigenous peoples physically, culturally, and spiritually. I had a dream where buffalo ran in herds down a street. I stood in the middle, and everyone told me to move, but the buffalo ran around me in its full power. In the midst of their strength, I saw how the Creator was utilizing the buffalo to restore unity, peace, love, and healing to my people. This act of reintroduction is a powerful symbol of justice because it acknowledges past wrongs and takes concrete steps toward healing and empowerment. It allows tribes to reconnect with their traditional practices, enhance food security, and revitalize ecosystems. The return of the buffalo is also a step towards ecological justice, recognizing the intrinsic connection between Indigenous people and our land. It supports the revival of balanced ecosystems and acknowledges the role of Indigenous knowledge and stewardship in maintaining environmental health. This effort is a testament to the resilience and strength of our Native communities in reclaiming our rights and culture. We have survived long enough to see the return of our relative, the buffalo. - LGB It’s more than a mission, it’s restorative justice. Outdoor Alliance is one of the outdoor industry’s greatest assets. If you’re a brand, there’s no better organization to align with; if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, this is the non-profit deserving of your donations. For 10 years, Outdoor Alliance has united the outdoor recreation community to achieve lasting conservation victories. These include protecting millions acres of public lands, billions in funding for the outdoors, and converting more than 100,000 outdoor enthusiasts into outdoor advocates. I have dedicated almost 5 years now to volunteering on their Board of Directors because OA fundamentally sees recreation as a conservation tool and genuinely unites different stakeholder groups in their coalition. 92% of recreationalists rely on public lands, yet only 19% make stewardship (advocacy, volunteer work or donations) an annual habit. Let’s close the stewardship gap by supporting this organization’s incredible work for the next 10 years! #outdooralliance #protectpubliclands Access Fund The Surfrider Foundation American Whitewater American Canoe Association International Mountain Bicycling Association Winter Wildlands Alliance The Mountaineers American Alpine Club Mazamas The Colorado Mountain Club

Proud of how much we at TAKE A PART CIO lean into communities to set their own value frameworks, to tell us what they know quality is, to explore and challenge what is important and why and to centre hyper-local engagement in how they want to work and connect. Hyper-local work creates lasting and generative engagements in culture, environment and heritage because it is applied and it is relevant. Have a watch to see some real joy. #oceanengagement #climatejustice #oceanliteracy #oceanstewardship #communityvalue #hyperlocal #sustainable
🎥 Films are powerful. This one, celebrating the culmination of 2 years of exploring ocean literacy and stewardship, environmental community building, skills development and creativity is a powerful one too. 🎉 Watch the celebration and culmination of Happier Blue Spaces, a film made with the East End community of Plymouth to share what the community has thought, loved, and benefitted from with our community embedded and led marine activist project - Happier Blue Spaces. 🎨 Over 2 years, we work with artists (like Cooking Sections, Far Flung Dance Theatre, Simon James and lots of Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall artists of social practice) to collaborate and investigate our ocean and work a little harder to get a little closer to it. 🌊 We rock pooled and photographed, we went on boat trips while drawing watercolours, we paddle boarded and saw exhibitions, we beach cleaned and crafted, we made illustrations and books together, we sang shanties and had silent discos, we went to science talks and looked the the ocean through microscopes, we took virtual tours and ate a lot of food from the local caf. We met LOTS of new people in our neighbourhood and we made friends because of the sea. 🙏 Huge thanks to East End Community Development Trust, Prince Rock Primary and Salisbury Road Primary Schools, Coxside Residents Arts Board (CRAB), Age UK Plymouth, Ocean Conservation Trust, and Plymouth Sound National Marine Park. With the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Devon Community Foundation and The Rank Foundation we were able to celebrate the joy the ocean brings and learn together how supporting it a little more where you live means you can enjoy it for longer - together. 🎬 Watch now! https://lnkd.in/g_5vFG_X

When you step outside, do you feel grateful for the space and it's accessibility? Or are you one of the 100 million Americans that lack access to a quality local park? Yes, 100 million Americans lack access to a quality local park. The Outdoors for All Act, a bipartisan bill in both the House and Senate, would ensure that the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership program has steady funding for generations to come. What does that mean for park access? This program awards grant funding through the Land and Water Conservation Fund, supporting the development of new parks and the renovation of existing outdoor recreation infrastructure in underinvested urban communities. Help to bring quality parks to ALL Americans, take action now ⏬ https://lnkd.in/eQ5sQRrx

🌄 The federal government recently announced plans to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Advocacy from Indigenous community leaders, community activists, and environmentalists across Southern California led to this landmark decision to preserve public land and provide critical open space and equitable access to nature. 🚵♀️Expanding the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument will promote equitable access to nature, safeguard a vital water source for Los Angeles County, tackle climate and biodiversity challenges, support national 30x30 goals, and honor the landscape’s culture and historical significance. 🙌 Alongside the Monument’s expansion, over $1 million in corporate, philanthropic, and state government support to ensure equitable access and recreation within the Monument was announced, a commitment that includes support from EGA member, Resources Legacy Fund.
