As my time in graduate school comes to an end, I am excited to announce that I have documented my journey as a student of wildlife conservation and field biology in an autobiographical film. I hope it sheds light on the experiences of Black folks in conservation and inspires others to pursue their dreams despite any self-doubt or fears. Enjoy and send me any questions you have! One of the best keynotes on the critical future of working lands and conservation. Lesli Allison I highly reccomend you listen to this. https://lnkd.in/g2pw3Vjk Old Salt Festival was profound for the caliber of minds that came together to share in case studies, collaborations happening between rancher and conservation organizations, stories of mindset shifts in producers and gov agencies, chefs and investors walking the walks. What Western Landowners Alliance is doing to build bridges is critical.

Manager of Conservation Partnerships at Colossal Biosciences | Protecting Biodiversity Through Rewilding & Biotechnology
What does American Prairie's mission to create the largest nature reserve in the contiguous U.S. teach us about modern day rewilding? 🦬🌾 For years, I have been a big admirer of the ambitious effort to rewild 5,000 sq miles of native Montana grassland habitat —an expanse larger than Glacier National Park and Yellowstone, combined. Here's a few lessons we can learn from this project so far: 🌱Restoration is Possible American Prairie is proof that degraded landscapes can be successfully restored to thriving ecosystems. Their reintroduction of bison and of other native species symbolizes the potential for major-scale rewilding. 💰Innovative Funding Models Work Through public-private partnerships, American Prairie is forging a new path for financing large-scale conservation, making it a viable and sustainable endeavor. They have raised nearly $200 million from over 4,000 donors and are demonstrating a new and durable model for conservation finance. 👥 People are Part of the Picture In response to tensions with local cattle ranchers who feel that the reserve threatens their way of life and livelihood, American Prairie has launched innovative initiatives that compensate for wildlife-friendly practices and aim to fostering coexistence between conservation and ranching. 🌎 There's Room for Coexistence Through dialogue, education, and collaboration with local communities and indigenous peoples, we can foster a coexistence ethic that is central to modern conservation. As American Prairie continuous to rebuild the lost American grasslands, it sets a compelling, hopeful precedent for how we might rewrite our relationship with the natural world. Recent studies and on-ground experiences consistently underscore a profound insight: Returning lands to indigenous conservationists isn't just a moral imperative, but a strategic one. Indigenous communities, with their deep-rooted knowledge and holistic approach, have historically proven to be the most effective stewards of their ancestral lands. By placing lands back under their care, we not only uphold justice but also foster ecological balance, preserving biodiversity and combating climate change. Let's champion indigenous-led conservation initiatives as the path forward. 🌍🍃 #LandRights #IndigenousConservation #SustainableFuture
Congratulations to the Native American Advancement Corporation on the acquisition of the Cohanzick Nature Reserve in Salem County! The forested 63-acre property is the traditional homeland of the ancient Cohanzick Lenape people, who have cherished and cared for this land for thousands of years. We are honored to have helped support this conservation initiative with such deep historical and ancestral significance. https://nature.ly/45BYo4S

We return this week to our conversation with Executive Director Katie Morrison and Conservation Science & Programs Manager Josh Killeen of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s (CPAWS) Southern Alberta Chapter. This week we explore some of the challenges these lands are facing in greater depth. 🌲 How does the underlying approach to forest management make it difficult for protection? 🏛️ What is the government’s role? 🎯 And what are the opportunities, particularly unique to this landscape, that could result in better outcomes for all? Don't miss it: https://buff.ly/3SbdcDa

Remember Tricky & Dot??? 🥺 (a.k.a the sweetest things to swim these springs) Well, we've got quite the update for you! Takeaway: don't be a Chad. 🙂 Tricky, Dot & even Chad call this place home, and we sure do believe it's worth protecting. A short but powerful production on the Fisher Foundation’s recent initiative in Northern KZN. The early teenage years are critical to world views being formed and if we can contribute to a shift in mindsets among the youth, one of these future custodians of our protected wildlife areas can go on to not only forge a career in conservation – but may well find themselves in a sphere of influence in business and government that can impact positively on policy change. Cultivating a transformative mindset within these vulnerable ‘fence line’ communities is not only a strategic move but a moral imperative to ensure the long-term well-being of both the ecosystems and the people who inhabit them. https://lnkd.in/grC--fEC

“We really believe in cultural-based approaches to conservation. And if you think about it, the conservation sector in general tends to prioritize funding, certainly, scientific research and things of that #nature. But it's #culture, cultural values and institutions that actually enable us to deploy science at scale.” -Amy Lewis, WILD’s CEO. Listen to Amy’s interview for KVGM: https://lnkd.in/eMtBXY5S 🌿 At WILD, our initiatives to create a healthier, wilder, and more respectful planet are at the forefront of the battle to protect wilderness.
