Competition is the most frequently heard word in the language of modern business and industry. Industrial companies need to be competitive to survive and thrive in today's global market. The global market is extremely competitive. It is like a never-ending sports competition. You can win today, but the race starts again tomorrow. Reading about the world’s most decorated Olympian, Michael Phelps, and his coach, Bob Bowman, I found a valuable lesson in their unique approach. Bowman often broke Phelps’ goggles during practice sessions without warning, forcing him to swim blind. This may sound harsh, but it was a deliberate strategy to train Phelps to handle unexpected challenges. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, while competing for his fifth gold medal in the 200m butterfly, Phelps experienced his worst nightmare: his goggles filled with water at the 60m mark. Thanks to Bowman’s training, Phelps was prepared. He had learned to count his strokes, feel the rhythm of a perfect stroke, and detect any deviation without relying on sight. Despite the malfunction, Phelps won the race and set a world record. This incredible feat underscored the importance of preparing for the worst. It got me thinking about how we can apply this mindset to our professional lives. Whether facing a market downturn, a critical project going off-track, or unexpected operational hiccups, our response defines our success. Michael Jordan missed over 9,000 shots and lost almost 300 games in his career. His journey started at the age of 15 when he was cut from his high school basketball team for not being tall enough. This rejection fueled a different level of motivation in him. He was determined to become THE BEST! Over the following summer, he grew four inches and trained harder. It all paid off when he made the varsity team and quickly became the best player. Migrating to a foreign land was worth the risk. Taking chances is about embracing the darkness of the unknown. It’s about facing reality and fear and uncertainty, but I had an unshakable confidence in myself. I was curious to see the outcome of this gamble on myself, what I was capable of. No matter how hard it may turn out to be, I knew that the pain of regret if I didn’t follow through would be much harder. The idea that my dream would end up being buried in the graveyard of dreams if I weren’t courageous and bold enough to execute on it was terrifying. When I made the leap of faith and landed at the University of Hawaii in Manoa in the fall of 1999, I joined a program that was one of the national powerhouses in volleyball competing in one of the best volleyball arenas in the world with the biggest and most loyal fan base in college volleyball. In a fiercely competitive environment that featured future international Hall of Fame coaches, teammates and competitors who went on to win the Gold Medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing with the US National Team, it was time for me to thrive. All the failures and losses I experienced in the past had built up my confidence and resilience and had elevated my leadership skills and “team-first” spirit. I was betting on myself and my entire focus centered on one obsession: winning. “In Heaven’s name, let us not wait for other people to come to us and call upon us to do great deeds. You only have a 0.03% chance of playing in the NBA. My mom tried to warn me. She showed me an article discussing the odds. But, when you're younger, you don't really care about what the odds say. So you keep hooping. Until you realize that competition is fierce in your own city... let alone in the entire world. I loved playing, but I didn't truly understand the work and dedication that was required to reach that goal. Only few people do. This isn't supposed to be a sad story though. While I didn't make it to the NBA, I'm very proud of my basketball resume. It includes playing on some of the best teams ever assembled at the Cégep de l'Outaouais and the University of Ottawa . Even here in Luxembourg, I played a big role in getting our club promoted to the First League, a feat never accomplished before in its 50 year history. Looking back, dreaming of making it to the NBA was never about making millions, it was about pushing myself beyond my limits and relishing the journey. It translates into every aspect of my life, still today. The dedication and perseverance I learned on the court have shaped me into a driven professional, an unstoppable problem-solver, and a true team player. The lessons you learn and the skills you develop will always be your winning advantage. The time of waiting for catastrophe to strike, before inflicting change in one’s life, needs to stop. What that catastrophe is, or tipping point, will be different for everyone. For an athlete, it could be an injury, getting benched, getting scratched, getting cut or getting traded. For me, it was getting traded in the second year of my NHL contract. Eventually it continued to spiral out of control, until I wound up in the second Italian league. I was the top prospect for the Anaheim Ducks, in the summer of 2010. It took me getting to that low level league in Europe, to FINALLY decide to attempt at optimizing my mindset. But, it worked and through my consistent intention, I was able to make it to the SHL in Sweden, which is arguably the second best league in the world. That was never my dream. My dream was always a career in the NHL. Had I been afforded guidance and mental performance training, I believe I’d still be playing. So for all colleges and universities, it’s time you start implementing daily mindset practices for your teams and for your athletes. I wrote a book and put a program together, that puts the player back into the driver seat of their life. Not just life in sports, but life outside sports. My book reminds you of your humanness. “Your rank rarely matters.” My response as he walked past and sneered as he eyed my belt. Thought that cos he’s a high black belt grade that He was guaranteed to win. He deserved to win. Everyone else was inferior to him. His rank at that time wasn’t far off from becoming master grade. This was a European Championships and you would expect a minimum level of standard to be present. He leveraged his rank to compete. Because on that day, the line up was around 20-25 competitors deep. With at least half the competitors having at least one major title to their name- European/ World Cup/ World Championship from various associations. The two fellow competitors next to me? Multiple European titles AND World Cup/ Champion titles to each of their names. Not an easy day out! Well, this guy didn’t make the podium. All the rank really shows is time served and how much you’ve promoted the martial art- mainly for those who teach and do workshops/ seminars. He was banking on his rank to have an influence to medal. What he has done previously was irrelevant to what he could do in that moment in time…where it matters. Over the coming weeks, I'm going to be sharing more cases where my clients were told to live with the pain as nothing could be done by their clinician. Up to consultant level. With all the letters, awards and accolades of working with top flight sports teams. That in their 20+ years of practice they've never seen or heard of any improvement, so why bother. And because of their position, the case ends and discharged. Just because you've been dismissed or many have said it cannot be done, doesn't necessarily mean this is life sentence.
