May finished as the most active month of the year for distributor dealmaking activity, based on the volume of M&A news covered by MDM. There was posted news of 40 different transactions during the month — either pending or completed — that involve at least one distributor. That’s the most since at least the start of 2024 when MDM began counting distributor deals separately from total M&A counts which also include manufacturers, associations and service providers. It was the most active distributor M&A month so far of 2024 by a longshot (29 in January).

I don’t usually share reviews, but a recent review that a broker submitted about our wholesale team really hit me where I live. “Always goes above and beyond. HARDI distributors saw a 9% year-over-year increase in revenue in January, boosted by an additional billing day but still a considerable rebound from December's 7.8% decline. While the 12-month growth rate was just 0.2%, the January figure marked a strong start to 2024 after sales flatlined compared to the booming 20% annual gains of the recent past.

I wasted a lot of time complaining about dispensary buyers in my first year running a multistate CannaBrand. 🤬 They don’t appreciate the value of a premium product 🤬 They buy lesser quality product from their friends 🤬 They don’t rebuy until completely stocked out 🤬 They drive down our margins—and theirs 🤬 They “lose” our samples constantly 💩 They have to be re-sold over and over again (this was the killer) But I dove deeper 🕵 I Secret Shopped 🚛 Drove deliveries myself 🔬 Studied their processes close-up And ultimately realized: they didn’t need to simply be sold (even tho that’s what they claimed to want/need) What they really needed was help (even tho they were suspicious of our motives and resisted) 😉 Here’s a 3-pronged approach that works, even when they believe they are resisting your help 😉: 1. Be easy to do business with --Be fair, reliable and professional --Focus on simple, strong sales processes --Don’t cause any customer dissatisfaction issues 2. Strive for Operational Excellence --100% compliance goal --Accurate and timely manifests, invoices, and deliveries --Full, balanced menu with 2-3 weeks sales in finished goods inventory 3. Quality product --Set a standard and meet it --Safe, consistent, effective, and hassle free 🎯 How many vendors do this successfully?
