The Compass Group Foundation, our independent charity registered with the Charity Commission in England and Wales, launched in January 2023. In its first full year of operation, the Foundation supported 14 initiatives across eight countries, helping to improve more than 2,800+ lives, as well as incubating 62 small to medium sized enterprise supplier businesses. From helping street food vendors to launch their own businesses and providing training so people can access job opportunities, to improving market access for farmers and much more, the Foundation is making a real impact in the communities in which we operate. Congratulations to our Compass Group UK & Ireland culinary superstars Jess Miller and Graham Singer who won big at The Craft Guild of Chefs Awards last week. Known as the culinary world's equivalent of the Oscars, Jess was awarded Apprentice Chef of the Year and Graham picked up the Culinary Hero Award. Jess was recognised for her determination in pushing the boundaries during her #apprenticeship, and Graham for his devotion to the industry and the huge commitment he makes in supporting his local community. 👏 Huge congratulations both! We’re very proud to share that our Compass Group UK & Ireland business has won “Best Educational Programme (Large Employer) 2024” at the Institute of Hospitality Awards. This prestigious industry award recognises our ‘Forward with Marcus Wareing’ programme - a best-in-class apprenticeship equipping Compass chefs with exceptional culinary skills, brought to life through added value enrichment activities, practical experiences, and a focus on sustainability, technology and the craft. Now in its third cohort and recruiting for cohort four, almost 50 Senior Chefs have started the programme and our teams continue to evolve its content in line with business objectives and industry trends. We’re proud of the work that Compass Group España continues to lead with its #FishRevolution. The project was born with a clear goal: to help children integrate fish into their daily diet, voluntarily and consciously. Thanks to the creativity of our chefs and their innovative recipes, we're opening the eyes of tomorrow’s generation to new tastes and flavours. Firm favourites with children are already proving to be fish pizza, fish lasaña and fish tortilla - using hake as a prinicpal ingredient. Our Managing Director for Spain & Portugal Fernando Pascual and our Director of Scolarest España Joan Vergés Niubó recently shared with some of our clients and chefs the news that we will have this programme in schools throughout the country in the next school year. Earlier this year, our Compass Group UK & Ireland ‘Women in Food’ Community launched our industry-first maternity jacket for chefs. Tried and tested by pregnant Compass chefs, our Women in Food team worked for over a year to perfect the design, health and safety specifications, comfort, fit and practicalities. This ensured the garment meets the needs of pregnant chefs and frontline female colleagues from across our diverse business. Gemma Evans-Hurley, Head of Culinary, Dine Contract Catering and Chair of Women in Food, commented: “At Compass, when we’re presented with a problem, we don’t rest until we find a solution. We identified that, across our industry, the maternity uniforms available for pregnant and postpartum colleagues were not enabling them to bring their best selves to work every day. For years, pregnant women have simply sized-up their uniform, which isn’t comfortable or flattering, with restricted movement making everyday tasks more challenging. Congratulations to our ESS – Defence, Energy and Government Services business in the UK who recently celebrated the graduation of the 1,00th student from our Junior Chef Academy! Our chefs have been delivering this ten-week cookery course to schoolchildren in the areas around our sites for over three years, recognising and teaching cooking as an essential life skill, educating young people about careers in hospitality and delivering social value in our local communities. The latest cohort from Exeter College marked their completion of the programme by cooking for guests at a special event held at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. Food is our passion. It’s what brings us all together. That’s why we were proud to host our Europe and Middle East (EME) Culinary Cup in Istanbul last month. 16 talented chefs from 8 different Compass EME countries, working together in teams to produce 24 mouth-watering plates, from starters to desserts, with procurement, sustainability and purpose at the heart. A truly spectacular event, the perfect opportunity to celebrate the skills and talent of our wonderful culinarians.
