The global battery recycling industry is growing rapidly - by 2030 there could be around 350 million electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide, with around 1.9 million EV batteries reaching end-of-life each year. By 2040, this could increase to 20 million EV batteries per year. To also address the environmental and social impacts of different recycling technologies, Systemiq Ltd. has published a new study titled ‘Advancing Sustainable Battery Recycling: Towards a Circular Battery System‘. This report not only examines the impacts and risks of recycling electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries, but also proposes ways forward to ensure a sustainable future for this rapidly growing global industry. For everyone interested in batteries I just want to draw your attention to a great piece of work by Systemiq Ltd. on the sustainability of battery recycling. It was launched this week at the Future Batteries Forum in Berlin. Battery recycling is a crucial part of the system shift towards an electrified mobility system. The work looked at the complex combination of different recycling technologies together with a range of sustainability parameters. It won’t be a surprise to most people that there is no 'one size fits all' answer to sustainability – operators need to optimize their individual operations and ecosystem. The report make suggestions on how to do this: 1.      10 industry principles to demonstrate leadership in sustainable battery recycling and further advance sustainability, 2.      Policy recommendations for regulators globally, and 3.      A programmatic approach to solving some of the more challenging topics and issues. Well worth a read.

Very happy to kick-off our strategically important research project, Circul8 (Smart Battery Circularity), a synergy project funded by KK-stiftelsen, at Mälardalen University, Eskilstuna. Circul8 aims to maximize battery circularity using advanced digital technologies with a focus on (1) digitally-enabled circular business models, (2) a digital twin platform, and (3) smart battery performance monitoring. The project will run until 2027 with involvement of 10 industrial companies. #Electrification is changing everything. It is allowing us to go farther, do more, emit less ... and it is driving demand for materials that the #recycledmaterials industry processes, placing #recyclers at the center of a #supplychain of geopolitical and socioeconomic importance. And it is posing new challenges for safety, policy, transportation, insurance, workforce training, and international trade. None of these challenges are insurmountable, but only if we address them together. That is why ISRI convened the Circularity & Electrification Action Summit, being held today (#AmericaRecyclesDay) in Greenville, SC and bringing together #automakers, #batteryrecyclers, #metalsrecyclers, #electronicsrecyclers, #shedders, #plasticsrecyclers, #batterymanufacturers, ##preciousmetals #refiners, #OEMS, #educators, #NGOs and policymakers from the state, federal and local levels to begin the development of a "National Roadmap for a Safe, Circular Electrified Economy by 2030." I recently took part in an eye-opening workshop at Luleå University of Technology (LTU). Cecilia Wästerlid a Project Manager for the ‘Recycling and Circularity of Batteries’ initiative at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden led the event, which was about recycling #lithiumbatteries . The workshop is part of a bigger project by #RISE and with the collaboration of our colleague Hossein Rahnama. We also had Anna Öhrwall Rönnbäck and Lena Abrahamsson who made insightful contributions to the discussions. ♻ What stood out during our in-depth discussions was the importance of the commitment to tracing the entire material life-cycle from the initial exploration for potential minerals to the end-of-life decisions for battery recycling. Such holistic understanding is not just enlightening; it’s critical for the circular economy's successful implementation. ♻ It was impossible not to discuss the significant role of the #Revolt #recycling facility in Skellefteå. This pioneering initiative by my former employer, Northvolt, is setting benchmarks in lithium battery recycling in the EU. Its contributions are invaluable for steering the Lithium batteries industry towards sustainability. 🔋 Together, let’s reimagine a future where the circularity of lithium batteries isn’t an exception but the rule. 💪
