One of the best things about camp is the ability to shrug off the person you are at school to try on a different persona. Loser at school? You can be funny or even Mr. Popular at camp, then take it all home with you to be a new somebody at school. The finest summer camps gives kids the confidence to try new things and grow. We see transformation at TheZone, every day. #transformation #children #youthdevelopment

Kids master skills according to their own schedule and they learn how to do things by watching each other. Summer camp accelerates the process because it means being 24/7 with peers, providing campers ample opportunity to observe and learn from each other. We watch our Zoniacs grow in leaps and bounds each summer. #childdevelopment #skillsdevelopment

Working on NRPA's Health and Wellness team and supporting their youth mentoring portfolio has been an amazing experience over the last 10 months. In celebration of January as National Mentoring Month, here's a short blog post I wrote on some strategies to engage mentors in youth programs! #MentoringMonth
Park and recreation agencies are one of the largest providers of youth development services nationwide. They support young people’s health and wellbeing, create opportunities to build life skills, and facilitate the discovery of new interests. This January, we celebrate National Mentoring Month! Join us as we spread awareness of the power of mentoring and the role park and recreation professionals play in providing youth mentoring services. THEME OF THE MONTH- WHAT IS FAMILY? In the next five weeks, our children will get the chance to explore relationships, from family and friends to community members. This unit will provide an opportunity to begin strengthening social-emotional skills as our students investigate similarities, celebrate differences, and have a dialogue about their families or communities. #wonderoflearning #curriculum #inquirybasedlearning #goddardschools #goddardschoolfortwayne #goddardschoolfortwaynein #preschool

The Many Meanings of 'Crack' at Charterhouse At Charterhouse School, the term "crack" refers to the tuck shop, an arts and crafts vernacular building where younger students buy sweets and the 6th formers (Specialists) enjoy beer in their club above. This unique structure symbolizes a journey from childhood indulgences to the privileges of adulthood. Metaphorically, the "crack" represents a divide or transition, similar to the German word "Riss," highlighting the progression through school life. Architecturally, the building embodies a split-level experience: sweets below for the younger students, marking innocence and simple pleasures, and beer above for the older students, representing maturity and new responsibilities. Culturally, the term "crack" also carries modern connotations as a potent, addictive drug, emphasizing the varied and complex meanings the word holds. This juxtaposition mirrors the dual nature of the Charterhouse building: a place of innocent enjoyment and the onset of adult privileges, illustrating the fine line between youthful exploration and the potential pitfalls of adulthood. The "crack" at Charterhouse is more than a building; it's a cultural landmark that encapsulates the school's unique traditions and the journey of growing up within its walls. #CharterhouseSchool #Crack #TuckShop #Riss #YouthToAdulthood #CulturalTransition #SchoolTraditions #StudentLife #UniqueSlang

I have just learnt of this amazing UK school which was founded over 100 years ago, so ahead of its time! Summerhill School believes lessons should be a child's choice and learning an invitation. They value the importance of play: "At Summerhill, play belongs to the child. We do not dress up learning situations so that the play will be 'productive', we do not look on and evaluate what they might learn from this or that game. Our children just play — and they can do it pretty well all day if they want to". Despite this, most students decide to sit for GCSE exams when they are ready (can be earlier or later than UK norm), demonstrating that children are more in-tune with their development and needs than are often given credit for. This 'Freedom Not Licence/Freedom with Responsibility' approach that the school takes equates to "do as you like - but you must not interfere with somebody else's freedom" and as a result they have common sense guidelines/rules such as 'no playing drums at 4am'. They are a democratic, self-governing community where children have equal vote to adults in the weekly meeting where decisions are made. It has elements of homeschooling, Ross Greene's CPS and alternative schooling philosophies such as Montessori and Steiner. However, never have I seen a school or system take a child's choice/autonomy to this level. We need to take some important lessons from this 100 year old UK example. #AlternativeEducation #EducationReform #HolisticEducation #BehaviourReframe #SelfDetermination #EmotionalDevelopment #ChildDevelopment
