For profit hospices-which now make up 70% of all US hospices, frighten me. Families are at their most vulnerable when a loved one is actively dying or near death. It is hard to make critically important care decisions when someone you love is in pain or in extremis. When I began my professional and personal journey with #hospice 4 decades ago, it was a concept, an alternative to dying in the hospital where the tendency is to keep treating someone even when the treatments themselves are futile and do not extend life in any meaningful way. Now, hospice is a profit center. IMHO, this is perverse. “For-profit hospices do a significantly worse job of providing this care than nonprofit agencies do, according to a study by the RAND Corporation. When you are a nonprofit, faith-based regional healthcare provider - you do things a bit different. You were not just strategically positioned here to profit off people. No, you were prayerfully planted here 99 years ago to serve your neighbors in this specific community. And how do these differences manifest themselves? You can see it in the aggressive recruitment of specialists to this region, in the support of rural hospital partners, in the investment in services that are community needs and not just money-makers, in chaplains celebrating with families who are welcoming a new child and ministering with families who have lost a loved one, in compassionate professionals who help patients navigate insurance questions and charity care and financial assistance … the list goes on and on. It also manifest itself in investing in the next generation. Yes, this new Hendrick Health academy could help inspire some ‘homegrown’ talent - but it is really about pouring into the kids in this community and inspiring them to consider a healthcare vocation where they too can love and serve their neighbors. Here's a service you may not be aware of: our Supported Discharge Service supports the NHS to get people home as soon as they can. For those vulnerable patients who have no-one at home, we can help the overcome the barriers to discharge by providing support with day-to-day living for a fixed period of time, normally between 4-6 weeks; helping with everyday chores such as shopping, picking up prescriptions and support to attend appointments. As with all our services, as we get to know the service users, we can also identify any other needs they have, offer other services or signpost to other agencies if needs be. A patient can begin hospice services 6 months before their anticipated death, allowing them to live more comfortably and improve their quality of life during the time they have left. While extending life is NOT the focus of hospice care, many patients do live longer as a result of focusing on comfort, improving symptoms, and quality of life. The patients and families who have the best experience with hospice typically spend many months on hospice services. Occasionally patients even improve so much that they “graduate” off of our services. The earlier we can welcome you on to hospice, the more time our multidisciplinary team has to get to know you, have a positive impact on you and your family, and ease your death transition. We not only provide physical and medical support, but spiritual and emotional support as well. When patients are referred too late, during their last weeks or days of life, we're not able to have as much of an impact and it's harder on everyone involved. Referring earlier makes a difference. 🌿☺️When I used to work full-time as a COTA/L and patients thanked me for the therapy they received or how their pain had disappeared, I always responded, “Thank God (with a big smile and a wink.” They’d either laugh or smile back in relief. ❤️🌿 🩺💚 I never wanted to take the credit. Even when I donated my kidney to my husband, I still didn’t want to take the credit🤷🏽♀️. Now that my focus is on helping other healthcare care professionals, I can say that I understand why… Depending on your role in the healthcare chain, you have the power to heal.
