Ben has been providing support to a wide range of charities and not-for-profit organisations with CAF Bank since 2015. He has over 10 years’ experience working exclusively with charities, and previously worked in retail and commercial banking for 25 years. Before joining CAF Bank, he worked for a firm that designed and implemented the application and monitoring processes for grant-making organisations. Ben has helped clients do more with their funds – by maximising the return they receive on cash surpluses and increasing income by looking at different methods of fundraising. He loves the steps involved with this; the process of meeting such a wide variety of people, all highly-motivated to do the very best for their charity. Recent financial pressures mean that many charities are increasing fundraising via alternative means that include selling non-donated goods in their shops, enhancing partnership opportunities with their corporate partners, and offering services beyond their core charitable activities. Yet the small-trading threshold for non-charitable trading of this kind remains at its 2019 threshold of £80,000. If this figure had risen in line with inflation, it would now be closer to £105,00. The fact that it hasn’t, means that many charities are now asking questions around the need to establish a trading entity and the points to consider when doing so. Trustees often sit on the boards of different charities. So it can raise flags when they see two quite different applications for the same project. If the budgets don't match? Multiple sets of objectives and outcomes? Different timelines? Which one is correct and are they trying to hide something? All of these can infer a serious problem at the charity and result in the trust or foundation not risking funding your project or organisation. When your proposals, website, strategies and staff bring the same message, with consistent language, to each table at which they are seen you can instil confidence in your potential funder. Your right and left hands are talking to each other and therefore investing in you is a good risk. #TrustFundraising

It’s even more complicated (and nonsensical/frustrating?) than that! There’s another, lesser-known (and lower…) audit threshold for charities. If a charity’s income is over £250,000 (but still less than the £1m mentioned), and its *gross* assets exceed £3.26m, it also has to have an audit. Liabilities don’t have any effect. So a charity with income of £950,000, and bitcoin of £2.5m and £600k in cash qualifies for an independent examination, but a church in London with income of £251,000, a church building of £2m, a manse of £700k and a gifted house for accommodation of church staff of £500k (with cash of only £80k in the bank, so total gross assets £3.28m) must have an audit. Low risk assets, and the mortgages of (say, total) £1m have no effect. This is a common situation we see often at Stewardship. Fiscal drag, huge increases in property values and general inflation since these thresholds were put in place have pulled large numbers of charities into the audit net. That clearly wasn’t the plan! Here’s hoping the Department for Culture, Media and Sport will review these thresholds soon, as they indicated after the Charities Act 2022 came into force.
Did you know that the audit threshold for charities is £1million, compared to over £10m for private companies? We know that our members, and their networks of charities and community organisations can struggle to find auditors, and have to fund audit costs of over £12 000, compared to less than £5000 for an independent inspection of accounts (the requirement for organisations with an income of less than £1m). This is expensive - especially for organisations who only just tip over the £1m threshold - as well as time-consuming for organisations who are already under pressure facing challenges such as the cost of living crisis. A consultation has just been launched on how the Charity Governance Code can be enhanced. It runs until 11 August. The consultation and accompanying review by a steering group is looking at its contents, use of language, user-friendliness and applicability to charities of different sizes. Details of how to feed into this consultation can be found below. https://lnkd.in/evhz-5HG From governance reviews I have done, it’s clear some charities find the Code unwieldy and have needed support to have it adapted when undertaking a governance review. Please share on to any contacts who may be able to provide insights to make the Code more user-friendly, especially for smaller charities. Advice on the CGC website is to continue using the current Code whilst the review is ongoing, rather than to postpone a governance review. As it is likely to be sometime in 2025 before the updated Code is published.

A worked with a charity lottery where the packages were something like: -1 ticket for $20 -3 tickets for $40 I can tell you, unequivocally, there were purchases made (without the 3-ticket package having sold out), where someone would buy two single tickets for $40 in a single transaction. And it wasn't isolated, either - it was a relatively consistent pattern. I understand that some people will buy single tickets separately hoping for numbers that aren't close to each other (despite, mathematically, that not making a difference). But these were on a single transaction when the option existed to get another ticket for the same price. #fundraisingoperations #charitableraffles #nonprofitlife
