"Too often, community organizing, and arts and cultural organizing are viewed as distinct and separate rather than inextricably intertwined. In philanthropy, foundations often put these efforts into different funding streams—and can sow division by fostering competition for resources. If we divorce governance from culture, we end up with institutions and developments that lack the context of our rich, meaningful history." In this piece for Nonprofit Quarterly, Jessica Norwood, Allen Kwabena Frimpong, Tia Oso, and Nwamaka Agbo, MPA collectively reflect on the essential role that art and culture play in reclaiming neighborhoods and communities. I am currently holding positions in two different organizations in the Kansas City community. A couple of recent events and follow up conversations have really been making me think about this a lot lately, and more than likely the fact that I knew going into 2023, October was going to be a busy month due to that. It is even more so now that it is here. 1st event - Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri (#JLKCMO) September General Membership Meeting. We had a simple ice breaker where we were to introduce ourselves to the fellow women around us. Then we were to do it again, this time taking ownership of the commitment we have made. 'Hi, I am Mindy Becker, and I am Junior League'. 2nd event - Last Tuesday was the first big fundraiser of the school year for Redbridge Elementary PTO. A chili cook-off competition and 5th graders sold baked goods for dessert. It is my first year on the board, 2023-24 Treasure. At the end of the night everyone was asking how much did we make. I was able to say how much cash was additionally on hand, but realized I didn't really prepare our PayPal and Venmo accounts well to split out the difference between the two events happening the same night. I went home and quickly down a rabbit hole of metadata I had no idea businesses and non-profits could get from Venmo and PayPal. It was so interesting to me, and I was able to split out payments between the two different events because of it. 3rd event - last weeks' team stand up on Thursday. As I stated earlier October is a busy community month for me, it's been planned that way for a while. One of the many things I appreciate and love about working for Right Triangle Consulting is that it affords me the opportunity and flexibility to create my own work schedule. I was lighter on news for work and chose to share my personal excitement over what I did with the Venmo metadata. The light-hearted comment was made that if you do something like this, and you do it well, you are now 'stuck'. We all know I am stuck, but I was stuck long before doing something that brought my professional skills into helping my community endeavors. I'm stuck because it's who I am, and a part of who I want to be. Now that there are only 2 weeks left to the month, I will be JLKCMO a lot more than any else leading up to the Holiday Mart (OCTOBER 27-29, 2023). I'm not so sure I'll be able to tie my passion for decor into my next Right Triangle stand up as something new, interesting, and relevant to work. But I love that I'm able to take the time off of work to do it to support the Great Kansas Community. https://lnkd.in/gsMEZ7ig

Excellent report https://lnkd.in/g29BYKTv by Center for Effective Philanthropy report about the impact of large, unrestricted grants on nonprofits. Insightful findings about the ways these types of grants influence the operation and performance of nonprofits. In addition, this report offers fresh data about how other funders experience this approach. One of most striking findings: "three-quarters of the interviewed funders express concern about nonprofits’ ability to handle large, unrestricted gifts." I hope these funders read the report and reflect on & revise their assumptions. Not perfect, for sure, and part of an ecosystem of funding approaches that makes this approach work (i.e., other funders adding value of various kinds)--a point highlighted in a Center for Effective Philanthropy blog by Ruth Levine a few years ago--but so many funders' fears are just unfounded. Let me add a meta finding suggested by CEPs insights (which CEP alludes to gently): on average, funders underestimate nonprofits' capabilities and strategic acumen & overestimate their own value-added. Kudos to CEP from bringing data to bear on these questions.

The philanthropy landscape is constantly evolving and a recent study from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks has shown that the younger generation has different habits when it comes to giving back. According to the study, individuals under 40 have unique approaches to philanthropy compared to their parents. It's important for us to understand these generational differences and adapt our strategies accordingly. How can #nonprofit boards evolve to better meet societal challenges and address diversity gaps? Nonprofit boards often lack the innovation and #diverse perspectives needed to effectively govern and address societal inequities. GHJ Search and Staffing Practice Leader Derrick Coleman and GHJ Nonprofit Practice Leader Donella Wilson share how boards can combat this by focusing on inclusive practices like reviewing appointment criteria to eliminate biases, conducting board audits, setting term limits, recruiting from diverse organizations and ensuring representation that reflects the communities they serve. https://bit.ly/47R7zjl
