We often say that, "it's the little things that make the biggest difference". Some of those little differences are: 1) truly valuing your organizational talent by supporting their need for a recharge. 2) providing a true "out-of-office" experience by redistributing work (e.g., email messages) while away 3) recognizing that the wellbeing of our talent/teams IS what drives performance for each individual AND our customers/clients. Today I had the extraordinary pleasure of honoring our colleague Bärbel Schäfgen on her 40th anniversary. The whole team with Matthias Klöckner surprised her in the morning with a spontaneous office party. This is probably an anniversary that is not possible in many companies and will probably occur less and less in the future. Such a long commitment and attachment to a company does not fit into the life planning of many people today. At Finzelberg, this is not uncommon. Many employees have spent their CV at Finzelberg from their training to retirement. Today, they are often entrusted with completely different functions or tasks than they were at the time of their employment. Sometimes they stay in the same job and just do it excellent day after day. I sometimes have to smile when managers ask me how we as a company could get there. When I am presented with the latest innovative models for employee retention every year, I am often surprised that very elementary components are rarely taken into account here. Actually, it's quite simple: Treat your employees the way you want them to work for your company: -       Do everything you can for your employee so that the company is a 2nd home. -       Go with them through the ups and downs that are normal in everyone's life. -       Be loyal, especially in difficult economic times, and -       never forget to express how grateful you are to have him in the company. This does not require management systems, just attention and personal respect for all those who make your company's goals their own.

Today marked one year at United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes. In a year full of big changes, relocations, and growing roots, I learned a few things: 1. It’s never too late to “reset”. You can tear it all down and build it all back up again. 2. You don’t know what is going to happen–and neither does anyone else. We are all “winging it” 3. Always ask “why”. Stay curious, better understand decisions, and never settle for “because we have always done it that way”. 4. When you are clear on what matters to you, and understand your values, you know when life gets out of sync and can recalibrate. 5. Energy and attitudes are contagious. Passion fuels passion. It’s incredible what we can accomplish collectively when we believe in the work we do. 6. Stories are everywhere, all the time. Do your homework and get good at noticing. Stories have an impact–you can glean things from every story you hear, and stories are what take organizations to new heights. 7. You can do really hard things. And you can ask for help with those really hard things. 8. Watching my daughter make her own Rochester memories and reunite with an extension of her village has brought me so much joy–more than I ever imagined. 9. I can be a priority–and definitely should not let almost a year pass before getting a haircut. 10. I am excited for what’s next! It will only get better from here. One of the last pictures I took of Vermont is this one with my daughter and dog overlooking their little backyard kingdom. The photo brings me serenity, reminiscing of the incredible life we had in Vermont and the incredible life we will now have here. Onward to the next milestone!
