Dynamic Education, Governance, and Development Specialist Driving Transformational Development and Resilience in Public and Humanitarian Sectors
𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. With El Niño rains expected soon, schools in flood-prone areas need proper plans to keep students safe. As an education administrator, I know firsthand that disaster preparedness saves lives. Over 400 households require relocation support in Isiolo. Schools must also assess risks and have contingencies in place. This includes securing safe higher-ground venues, stockpiling supplies, training staff, and educating students on responding to emergencies. Furthermore, it's vital to highlight the poor road infrastructure in most of the FCDC counties. This might disrupt road transport and thereby hamper the delivery of examination materials, food supplies, and other necessities. Drawing from my background overseeing county education policy and budgets, I would advise dedicated emergency planning for schools. Administrators can tap funds and partners to install flood barriers, establish evacuation protocols, and conduct safety drills. Lessons should integrate preparedness. Being proactive allows schools to continue operating safely during disasters. However, severe events often mean closure, stalled learning, and reconstruction needs. Flood damage to classrooms, loss of learning materials, and displacement of students and teachers can have long-term impacts. Learners may suffer from trauma and disrupted education. Key exams and graduation timelines face delays. Education leaders must have the foresight and resources to recover. Temporary venues, counselors, community partnerships, and emergency remote learning options are crucial. Schools can demonstrate resilience in the harshest conditions with planning, collective action, and solid funding. But prevention and mitigation should be the priority. Our students deserve that forethought. #schoolsafety #emergencypreparedness #Elnino #Floods

City Manager | Strategic Planner | Grant Funding Expert | Nonprofit Advocate | Passionate about Community Development and Innovation
The 2024 Local Government Spring Conference hosted by the League Of Oregon Cities is underway, featuring a crucial session for local government managers on "Planning For & Recovering from an Emergency." Given the string of natural disasters and public health crises impacting Oregon in recent years, today’s session is a deep dive into preparing and bouncing back from emergencies. Topics cover the breadth of challenges from watershed degradation to economic and tourism downturns, all the way to direct property damage. Today’s discussion included insights from frontline staff experienced in managing large urban fire crises in emergency operation centers. They shared strategies on effective communication across different jurisdictions, what support cities can expect from FEMA, and the realities of post-disaster recovery. The panelists also reflected on their experiences, sharing valuable lessons on preparedness and how communities can enhance their resilience for future challenges. #LocalGov #EmergencyPreparedness #CommunityResilience

SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol) will be in place from Thursday 8th February 2024 until Friday 9th February. If you know anyone who may be rough sleeping please read this and share it. What is the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) and when is it triggered? When nighttime temperatures are forecast to be zero or below for 3 or more consecutive nights the Council, in line with central government expectations, makes emergency accommodation available to people who may otherwise have to sleep rough. How is this provision accessed in Kirklees? During office hours access to SWEP is only via the Housing Solutions Service following an assessment by a Housing Solutions Officer (HSO). Outside office hours access to SWEP is via Clare House (0300 304 7936) who will coordinate self-referrals and those facilitated by street outreach support. The Council’s Emergency Duty Service (01484 414933) can also deal with referrals by organisations such as the Police or Hospitals. https://lnkd.in/et3e_k9E

Further to my earlier post, regarding Module 1 of the report by Baronness Hallet, a response of The Emergency Planning Society.
Those who have been impacted by, and those who continue to be affected by COVID-19, very much remain in the thoughts of the Emergency Planning Society and we continue to share our condolences with families bereaved as a result of the pandemic. As a Society, we read with interest and welcome the Module 1 report by Baroness Hallet published today. In her report she notes the difficulties local responders experienced in having their views and expertise listened to during the pandemic. Many of the findings and recommendations within the report endorse what the EPS membership have been calling for from central government for some time. This is especially with regard to the “UK-wide independent statutory body for whole-system civil emergency preparedness, resilience and response” and the importance of learning lessons and sharing that learning. The complexities of emergency preparedness and response require a whole of society approach and a approach that is flexible and adaptable to a constant changing operating environment. The complexity of this is exacerbated by a cycle of changing structures and a lack of knowledge of civil contingencies, integrated emergency management, emergency planning at all levels. The recommendations made within Module 1 make positive steps to improve resilience and emergency preparedness in the UK, for pandemics as well as wider incidents. As the professional body for resilience professionals, the EPS looks forward to the government’s response to these recommendations. We hope, and would implore, that adoption of the recommendations is coupled with sustainable resourcing, including but not limited to financial support, so that change can be meaningful and long lasting.

are lessons being learned? how the aim to increase safety and habitability standards is compatible with the often ideological localized approach? #shelter #humanitarianshelter
This is a fantastic report on the "State of Fire Safety in Humanitarian Shelter and Settlements" from #ourmarvellousteams at Kindling, Global Shelter Cluster, Danielle Antonellis! With traditional cooking, heating and lighting methods being a frequent cause of accidental fires, often on a large scale, and of consequential burn and scald injuries, I especially commend the authors on addressing the need for education, prevention and appropriate and timely treatment of #burns and #scalds, which become the traumatic and overwhelming health consequences of fires! 🔥 Embed #FireSafety and burns #education within health programming to reduce the impact of fire risk as a result of decisions, practices, and gaps in knowledge. 🔥 Raise the profile of #fire safety among humanitarian professionals and within communities by connecting fire to other related activities, like burns #prevention or treatment by health practitioners. 🔥 Incorporate fire risk assessment for health facilities into the wider fire safety measures, inclusive of burn care provision. 🔥 Quantify (and understand) the impact of local fire risk through integration of fire-related injury and illness data into overall health data collection. This insightful research report approaches the complexities of fire risk reduction and safety strategies with a human experience lens, reflecting on the challenges in tackling fire and fire-related injuries across a vast diversity of global humanitarian settings. Absolutely incredible work! #BeBurnsAware #SavingLivesIsNotEnough 👇🏻 https://lnkd.in/ebsC3xWB
