Challenges of LatinX Learners: Are We Keeping the College Promise? Join the conversation on Let's Talk Ed this week where Zahi Atallah speaks to guest Ms. Violeta Mendoza Wenger. The discussion addresses the critical topic of keeping the college promise for LatinX learners. The focus is on understanding the unique challenges faced by this important, and fast-growing, population and exploring how colleges across the US can better support their success by understanding some of their particular needs. It is critical to note that the umbrella term of LatinX does not define individuals, and that not all members of this background are a monolith that should be treated as such. However, there may be particular considerations that target the group’s distinct needs, while recognizing their individuality, ethnic and national ancestry, personal and family background, etc. In segment 1: "Challenges of LatinX Learners: Are We Keeping the College Promise?", we address the various obstacles LatinX students encounter in higher education and evaluate whether current efforts are sufficient in fulfilling the college promise. While being a LatinX population is not monolithic, there may be certain commonalities that are critical to keeping the promise of college. In segment 2, entitled "Understanding the Particular Needs of LatinX College Students”, we speak to the specific needs of LatinX students, highlighting the cultural, financial, and academic factors that impact their college experience. What are we in higher education missing the boat on? Finally, in segment 3: "LatinX in Higher Education: How to Empower Their Success!", Violeta provides some actionable recommendations and strategies to empower LatinX students, ensuring they receive the support necessary to thrive and succeed in higher education.
