Many european firms tend not to make any difference between a Product Manager (PM) and a Product Marketing Manager (PMM) but these are actually not the same jobs. While the PM is responsible for defining the product, the PMM markets it. Both roles have overlapping areas such as competitive analysis, customer feedback, pricing, and sales enablement and they certainly need to work in a symbiotic fashion. Many companies in particular in Europe tend to have one single person filling both roles (often for budget reasons). The product management and product marketing relationship is one of the most dysfunctional relationships in modern corporations and yet one of the most important ones. The problem is that product marketing leans into the “marketing” function and acts as the mouthpiece for the product whereas product management leans into product development. So when it comes to hearing and understanding the customer and communicating their needs we’ve divorced the mouth from the ears. But to really be able to understand the voice of the customer, which is important for product and marketing, you need both the mouth and the ears in order to have a two way conversation. IMO, in most organizations these two roles should be one and the same. Short of that, product managers should spend more of their time on marketing activities and product marketing should spend more time advising the product team on strategy. Product marketers: if you’re not in most customer conversations with PMs or listening to call recordings when they’re getting into the weeds with customers about their challenges, there’s a good chance you’re missing out on some of the most important nuggets about your customer’s pain. Product managers: if you’re not helping craft the message at a very detailed level, you’re missing out on one of the best opportunities to critically reflect on the value you’re delivering and how you talk about in externally and internally. This is more important than ever, especially in an economy where the voice of the customer is one of the most powerful marketing and pipeline generation levers. In Product Marketing the launch process should start way earlier than you think. The most important part of any launch starts your first week on the job as you start building relationships with internal teams. These relationships are essential because they can be the difference between short notice of a tier 1 or tier 3 launch and being included early in the conversations so your voice and the voice of the customer are heard. I recommend making it a priority to start building connections with product, business intelligence, sales, marketing, and customer success ASAP. 🗣️Once you have a strong relationship with the product team, they will make sure to include you in early discussions regarding upcoming releases. If you’re not automatically included, you can reiterate your value and ask to be added to meetings to ensure your involvement at the appropriate step. 🤝This is also the difference between other teams like business intelligence and marketing telling you, “Well, this is the best we can do in the allocated time” vs. a collaborative approach and exceptional well-thought-out materials being created to support the launch. 🗓️The earlier you are aware of upcoming products and anticipated releases, the earlier you can align customer success, marketing, business intelligence, and sales. This is important because you can collaborate effectively and give other departments a heads-up of what’s to come so they can slot you into their processes and you will have time to train the appropriate parties. 🕊️Lastly, it can be the difference between your role feeling disorganized and always in reactive mode versus being organized and having the ability to be proactive. Thriving under pressure and working quickly is different from feeling rushed and having to always make it work. Product Marketing is glue which bridges the inside to the outside for tech companies. Product Marketing ensures customer-first messaging and value propositions are delivered in compelling ways that customers understand and are meaningful to them.

Agree? As a product manager who doesn't get so many questions from CS, Sales, Marketing, it feels like having the freedom to focus on what's most important: building great products. Marketing is important, of course, but it's not my job. My job is to understand the needs of our users and customers, and to build products that meet those needs. Marketing can help to promote our products and reach new users, but it's up to me to make sure that our products are actually worth promoting. When I'm not disturbed by marketing, I can focus on the following: Understanding user needs: I spend time talking to users and customers to understand their pain points and what they need from our products. Defining product requirements: Once I understand user needs, I work with engineers to define the requirements for new products and features. Prioritizing features: I need to prioritize features based on their importance to users and their impact on the business. Tracking product metrics: I track product metrics to see how users are interacting with our products and to identify areas for improvement. Without marketing distractions, I can focus on these tasks and build products that users love. It also feels good to have a trusted relationship with my marketing team. I know that they are there to help me promote my products, but they also respect my vision for the product and my priorities. We work together to create a marketing strategy that is aligned with my product goals. Overall, being a product manager who doesn't get disturbed by marketing is a great feeling.
