As someone who has been working in child trauma prevention and health science education for the past 5 years, I want to comment on the Quiet on the Set documentary revelations of child abuse against young actors. I’m consistently struck when the situations are made public, at the statements made by the organizations, in this case the tv network Nickelodeon—usually something like "We are shocked to know that our organization whose mission it is to serve children, has harmed them. We renew our commitment to protecting the children in their care." (As an aside—that they profit from!) Besides the issues of exploitation already present in child media, since children can’t fully consent to what all they’re signing up for—it always reminds me that the cycles of abuse will continue as long as we don’t understand this one crucial thing: >> People who are attracted to children *actively seek out proximity to children.* << It should be baked into any organizational structure the safety protocols needed to protect from the predators who WILL BE THERE. They will be there. They will intentionally make their way there. In schools, in children’s sports, in Sunday School, in Boy Scouts, in youth detention facilities. Anywhere there are children, the child predators will follow. And similarly we must stop being confused about: + narcissists with savior complex and action bias will actively seek out nonprofit and social sector roles + people who need power to feed their egos will actively seek out roles that feed their egos (politicians, executive leadership, health influencers, etc) We need to stop being surprised by the way things actually work and the way people actually are. “The irony of an abusive person entering a helping (or children’s) field!” — I’ve heard this so much. And while there’s certainly irony in it—it will never not be this way. This is the way, not the exception. And it’s not to accuse everyone in the field but rather to build safeguards because it’s not a matter of “if” but “when” the predators, abusers, and psychopaths* will be there. (*people who endured their own significant developmental trauma but who should nonetheless be kept away from leadership roles and away from children)

#celebrate #shinealight   Not sure if you’ve seen it but another series of ‘Old People’s Home For Teenagers’ is back on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) – Tuesday nights 8.30pm.   If you haven’t seen the show before, it brings a group of teenagers and retirees from a complex together as part of an inter-generational project to see if these interactions can increase quality of life, how they view themselves, mobility etc.   It’s a fantastic project which initially started with Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds.   What saddens me watching the series is how many retired people and teenagers are lonely and don’t have a positive view of life, but it pleases me by the end that not only has this picked up, but many friendships have been formed which continue after the experiment concludes.   These intergenerational projects have proved highly successful in helping both parties increase their quality of life including emotional, physical, mental health and wellbeing.   I’m hoping the Government will fund more of these programs because it’s clearly needed and it works.   You can catch up on Series 1 and 2 on ABC iview – it’s well worth a look.   Cheers Tamara #ProblemSolverExtraordinaire #problemsolver #problem #problemsolving #businesscoaching #businesscoach #author #smallbusiness #smallbiz #smallbusinesses #thebusinessofsport https://lnkd.in/gbYNmiv4

According to data from the World Population Review, kidnapping globally ranks as the most common reason for missing person reports, with children under six being the most frequent victims. Surprisingly, in many cases, the perpetrators are the children's non-custodial parents. Fortunately, many missing children are safely recovered.
