Attorney • Author • Award-winning Advocate Talks about #mentalhealth #advocacy Leading the charge for those who are caregiving while career building.

“My mom is still alive, in a mental institution,” she explains in the book. “My goal is to get enough money to buy a duplex. I want to put her in one of the units and hire a full-time nurse to take care of her. Then I want to get her whatever medications she needs so she can be my mama again. Honestly, that’s all I really want in life.” Tiffany Haddish Never knew that I would connect with someone who wanted the same thing for her mom. Both of us have the hope that any success in our careers would put us in a position to help our moms. The hope is very promising, but what do you do when your mom doesn’t want to live in the place or receive the help that you are able provide? It’s not that it’s not a nice place, in a decent neighborhood, close to public transportation…it’s the symptoms related to her illness-delusions and hallucinations -that tell her otherwise. As a caregiver, I’m simultaneously an advocate who happens to also be a housing and development lawyer. However, quality affordable housing is scarce. Working in the housing industry doesn’t make it magically appear. It’s imperative to know your loved one’s rights and work with community organizations, including crisis intervention team (CIT) trained law enforcement, to ensure a full continuum of care for your loved one. I’m grateful for local housing organizations that do their best to help those living with severe mental claim their space in the community and live their best lives to the fullest.
