𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲: 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱! The South African Institute of Black Property Practitioners is hosting its annual convention between the 31st of July and 1st of August 2024. Acknowledging the structural blockages that continue to characterise the sector and exclude black players from full participation is a crucial step towards equity. It is imperative that a policy and regulatory environment that gives everyone an equal opportunity to succeed is created. What just happened to Fearless Fund is deeply concerning for DEIA practitioners and the mission of creating pathways for black people to access capital in their businesses and wealth for their families. This situation highlights the persistent efforts by some individuals—primarily those who are white and privileged—to hinder the progress of Black communities in accessing capital. For those committed to advancing DEIA, it is crucial to reconsider our strategies. Universities are already experiencing varied impacts, with some suffering setbacks while others may quietly celebrate the obstacles to progress. Similarly, several companies, many of which previously engaged in DEIA efforts only under public pressure, are now re-evaluating their investment in initiatives designed to diversify their workforces and leadership. The challenges ahead are significant. It is imperative to develop strategic approaches to continue addressing these critical issues and ensure that the progress toward equity and inclusion is not thwarted.

In 2023, AWBI was increasingly intentional about convening practitioners and supporters to create a just economy. Hence, we launched the Black Community Wealth Network – a national network positioned to build a broad network of practitioners and supporters committed to the task of building Black community wealth. And through it, we have expanded the narrative to apply a more interdisciplinary analysis on what it means to build wealth for Black people and communities, according to Janelle Williams, PhD, CEO and Co-Founder of AWBI. Last week, I had the incredible honor of joining fellow authors Patricia Russell and Wendy Moffatt on a panel for a Public Service Agency's Black Heritage and Cultural Committee's (BHCC) Lunch & Learn Series! Their theme for this year is "Celebrating Black Excellence and its Impact on the World”, and together, we dove into the vital topic of education, specifically how to keep our Black children & youth engaged and empowered through positive representation in the books they read and learn from. The discussions that we had with the 120+ attendees during the Lunch & Learn session was thoroughly informative, uplifting and inspiring. Representation does matter! Having books and resources written by Black authors filled with pictures, facts and cultural experiences allows our children to see themselves reflected in the stories they read, reminding them of their strength, heritage, and boundless potential. I must give HUGE thanks and shout out to the BHCC Committee for organizing such an impactful event celebrating Black excellence in Canada. You're truly making a difference in the lives of so many people by facilitating these events! 💡 So now, it’s time to fill up the shelves of our bookcases, our libraries and our classrooms with books written by some incredible Black authors. Share your favorite Black authors in the comments below, and share this post with bookstore owners, librarians, educators and others who can help get these books into more places and spaces.
