We were honored to have Senior Fellow Ari Shaw, Ph.D. participate in the Milken Institute’s 2024 Global Conference this week to discuss the role of companies in LGBTQ+ rights. As Ari said, “Why does it matter for democracy that we have diversity, that we have LGBTQ people as full participants in political and economic society? The CEO of Deloitte presented an inspiring case at the Out & Equal event in Orlando, USA, showcasing their success with over 360 employees at the event. Some learnings from his speech: Leaders play a pivotal role in fostering inclusivity and equality, particularly in the context of LGBTQ+ rights and diversity. It is of paramount importance for leaders to actively educate themselves about the diverse experiences and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. By doing so, they can better understand the unique needs and perspectives of this community, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive environment. Furthermore, leaders must commit to championing equality for LGBTQ+ individuals within their organizations and communities. This commitment goes beyond mere words; it requires tangible actions and policies that promote fairness and nondiscrimination. Being a leader in training entails a willingness to be vulnerable and open to learning from LGBTQ+ colleagues and community members. Vulnerability allows leaders to acknowledge their own biases, challenge stereotypes, and actively work towards a more equitable world. In doing so, they set an example for others to follow, creating a more inclusive and accepting society for all.

June is Pride Month. For the LGBTQ+ community, #PrideMonth promotes dignity, equal rights, and self-affirmation and is a way of increasing society’s awareness of the issues they face. As companies engage in DEI planning and initiatives, it is key that all groups are represented. The acronym LGBTQ+ has been extended to encompass a more diverse group, most recently shown as LGBTQIA2s+, indicating the continued focus on inclusion for all. As advocates for corporate social responsibility with a diverse team, we strive for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion because they're essential values. However, effectively communicating these values can be challenging for companies particularly during LGBTQ+ Pride Month when companies unveil rainbow-themed products and rebranding efforts. The phenomenon of "rainbow washing" has led to skepticism towards brands that seem to capitalize on the LGBTQ+ community, often resulting in fumbled Pride messaging or misaligned values. When your personal values are aligned with those of your employer. It’s a match. Im happy that here in DHL Supply Chain we are clear about our approach towards LGBTQ+ communities. We promote the topics. We educate ourselves to be able to be inclusive, to make this company a better place for all of us. And to be able to provide our support. Empathy and respect are not a measurable KPI (although I am sure there are links to be measured), but they are key in shaping the culture.
